Species Composition of Rice Stemborers in Kushtia Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The yellow stemborer (YSB), Scirpophaga incertulas dominated (52.53 – 86.52%) the borer population in all the three seasons. The dark headed stemborer (DHB), Chilo polychrysus, population increased (43.43%) considerably in Boro season. The pink stemborer (PSB), Sesamia inferens larvae was observed in Aus and Boro season, but the population was very low (1.92 – 4.04%). Comparison with season and crop stages it was found that T. Aman season and mid tillering stage was the most vulnenable for stemborer infestation.

Objectives:

To know the species composition of stemborers in Kushtia region.

Methodology:

The relative abundance of rice stem borers, infesting rice fields was studied at Amla farm in Kushtia. The study was carried out by counting the larvae of different species of stem borers found from the dissection of infested tillers during T. Aus 2007, T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2008 seasons. The infested tillers (manifested by DH and WHs) were collected from 4 fields of BRRI dhan28, BR11 and BRRI dhan29 grown in T. Aus, T. Aman and Boro seasons respectively. All the fields were managed under ideal recommended practices except the measures against any insect pest. The fields were left open for natural infestation of insect pests. Samplings were made approximately at 15 days interval from the day of transplanting during the cropping periods for tiller dissection. In addition to the sampling, data on infestation level of each of the field was also recorded on each of the sampling dates. Approximately 25 infested tillers were collected from each of the four fields in each season. The collected tillers were dissected and the number and species of the larvae found from them were recorded against each plot. The number of the larvae was presented as the percentage of the total larvae found.

Achievement/Findings:

The stemborer infestation was low in Aus and Boro seasons. The highest infestation (27.46%) in the field was observed at mid tillering stage in T. Aman season. The borer infestation ranged in between 1.4 – 8.03% and 0.75 – 3.39% in T Aus and Boro season respectively. A total of 1365 tillers (Aus-342. Aman -662 and Boro – 361) were dissected for borer larvae during the study period. The dark headed stemborer (DHB), Chilo polychrysus, population increased (43.43%) considerably in Boro season. The pink stemborer (PSB), Sesamia inferens larvae was observed in Aus and Boro season, but the population was very negligible (1.92 – 4.04%) in comparison to two of the other borers.
