Effect of Storage Containers on the Development of Stored Grain Insect Pests

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three different stored containers were evaluated in a well ventilated store room of Farm Machineries and Post Harvest Division to know the intensity of population built up of stored grain insect and found that different stored grain insect population and their infestation were comparatively lower in painted motka than the unpainted motka and jute bags.

Objectives:

To know the effect of different containers on the population buildup of stored grain insect pests and intensity of damage.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in collaboration with Farm Machinery and Post Harvest Technology (FMPHT) division during the period from 14 August 2007 to 30 July 2008. Rice seed, BRRI dhan29 was collected from Farm division and was sun dried to bring the moisture content at around 11.1% and then cooled in shade. The paddy was kept in three different types of containers (viz., painted motka, unpainted motka and Jute bag). The opening ends of the motkas were kept closed by earthen plate with a hole in the center to facilitate sampling with the help of a tier. The holes were closed with cork after collecting the samples. The capacity of the containers ranged from 20-25 kg seeds. The containers were kept in the 1st floor of a well ventilated store room of FMPHT division. The experiment was designed in CRD with 3 replications considering each container as a replication. A tier was used to collect sample of 100 gm paddy from each container (replication). Samples were taken at 45 days interval upto 5th sample and the rest two at 60 days intervals along with moisture and temperature of the grain. The samples were examined for stored grain insect pests. The population of each pest was recorded under a magnifying glass at field laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

Angoumois grain moth (AGM), lesser grain borer (LGB) and rice weevil (RW) were found as the primary pests. The flat grain beetle (FGB), saw tooth beetle (STB), red flour beetle (RFB), mites and parasites infested the grain as the secondary pests. The population of AGM, mite, RW, FGB and RFB was higher in unpainted motka. However, the LGB was found higher in number in painted motka than the other two types of containers. The higher population of the pests in unpainted motka and jute bag was probably due to supply of fresh air from outside through the micropores in the containers. Besides, the insects had no chance to escape from the motka like the jute bags. Insect population was comparatively higher in unpainted motka than jute bags but percent damage of the grain was higher in jute bags than unpainted and painted motkas. After emergence and oviposition in the grains, insects in jute bags fled away. Before fleeing away the insects caused severe damage in the grains of jute bags during larval and adult stages. Thus grains in jute bag container suffered more infestation of stored pests than the grains of unpainted and painted motkas. Average moisture content in unpainted motka (12.15%) and jute bag (12.01%) was slightly higher than in the painted motka (11.98%). This difference in moisture might have some contribution in higher population build up in the former two containers. Moreover, average temperature in jute bag (27.50⁰C) was found to be higher than the other two containers (26.75 to 26.970C). This might be a reason for higher insect infestation in jute bag. However, the relationship of moisture content and temperature with the insect population needs further investigation.
