Varietal Reaction of Some BRRI Varieties Against Different Stored Grain Insect Pests

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The extent of population development of a stored grain pest, angoumois grain moth (AGM) (Sitotroga cerealella) was studied on 11 BRRI developed boro varieties under laboratory condition to observe the varietal reactions of the pest. Among the tested BRRI varieties, BR19, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan36 harboured comparatively higher pest population throughout the study period and consequently suffered higher weight losses.

Objectives:

To observe the varietal reactions of eleven BRRI varieties against the stored grain insect pests.

Methodology:

The extent of population development of a stored grain pest, angoumois grain moth (AGM) (Sitotroga cerealella) were studied on 11 BRRI developed boro varieties under laboratory condition. About 150 g of unhusked rice of each variety, collected from newly harvested boro crops was kept in individual small containers. Each variety had three replications. Each of the containers, having different variety, was infested with 20-25 (approximately) fertilized eggs of the test insect. The openings of the containers were made closed by fine mesh nylon nets for proper aeration. Altogether, a total of 33 containers, infested with angoumois grain moth (AGM) eggs were left undisturbed in CRD on a rack. The number of moths emerged in each container were counted at 30 days interval. The counts were taken upto the 9th generations of the pest. The moisture content of grains at the initiation and termination of the experiment were recorded. The experiment was initiated on 14 August 2007 and terminated on 24 July 2008, respectively.

BR19 showed consistently higher population of the pest and consequently suffered the highest percent weight loss among the test varieties. Angoumois grain moth population development on the test varieties differed significantly in all the generations but no definite pattern or trend of population development in subsequent generations was observed in most of the varieties. However, BR19 and BRRI dhan28 showed consistency having significantly highest population except those of the 1st generation in case of BR19 and 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations of BRRI dhan28. In general, the insect population steadily increased up to 3rd generation and then decreased sharply irrespective of the varieties. Higher number of AGM was observed in 2nd, 3rd and 4th generations. BR16 and BRRI dhan29 had higher populations in the 1st generation, but showed no consistency in the later generations which indicated that the population development of the pest on them was discouraged. Out of the 11 Boro varieties BR19, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan36 harboured comparatively higher pest population throughout the study period and consequently suffered higher weight losses. Considering the extent of initial and subsequent population development and the percent weight loss of the tested varieties BR19 and BRRI dhan28 followed by BRRI dhan35 and BRRI dhan36 appeared to be the most damaged varieties.
