In T. Aman season, increasing K level up to 20 kg/ha increased the grain yield of EH2, up to 40 kg/ha BRRI dhan30 and EH1, and up to 60 kg/ha the grain yield of BRRI dhan49. In K0 plot BRRI dhan49 and EH1 produced the higher yield of 3.09 and 3.20 t/ha, respectively. Increasing K level up to 20 kg/ha increased the grain yield of BRRI dhan28, up to 40 kg/ha the grain yield of BRRI dhan36, up to 60 kg/ha the grain yield of BRRI dhan45. BRRI dhan29 responded up to 80 kg K/ha. In native soil K condition, BRRI dhan28 produced the highest grain yield of 3.36 t/ha, which was significantly higher than that of BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan45. BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 have high yield potentiality than those of MVs during Boro season in both native K nutrient and fertilized condition. But in T. Aman season, BRRI dhan49 performed good result.During T.Aman, the highest K uptake was noted 57 kg/ha in the treatment which received 80 kg K/ha while in Boro season the highest K uptake was noted 62kg/ha in the treatment which received 80 kg K/ha incase of BRRI dhan 28.

1. to determine the K response behavior of BRRI MVs and Hybrid rice in a rice-fallow-rice cropping pattern.

This experiment was conducted in both T. Aman and Boro seasons at the BRRI farm, Gazipur (AEZ-28, land type -MHL). The soil of the experimental field was clay-loam in texture and slightly acidic in reaction (pH 5.7). Organic C, total N, available P and exchangeable K of the soil was 0.72%, 0.07%, 9.29 ppm and 0.18 meq /100 g soil, respectively. The available S and Zn (EDTA extracted) of the soil were 5.39 ppm and 3.65 ppm, respectively Five doses of K i.e. 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 kg /ha were imposed as treatment. The design of the experiment was split-plot. Potassium doses were assigned in the main plot and the varieties in the sub- plot. Each plot received a blanket dose of N, P, S and Zn at the rate of 145-25-24-0 kg/ha as STB in Boro and 97-15-14-0 kg/ha in T. Aman season, respectively. BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan49 (BR6592-4-6-4) and two hybrid entries EH1 and EH2 were used in T.Aman season, and the four BRRI MVs BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan45 were also tested in Boro season. At maturity, the crop was harvested from 5 m2 areas at the centre part of each plot and 16 hills were collected for straw yield. The grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis. Potassium content from plant samples were determined by standard analytical procedure.

During Boro 2008-09, increasing K level up to 20 kg/ha increased the grain yield of BRRI dhan28, up to 40 kg/ha the grain yield of BRRI dhan36, up to 60 kg/ha the grain yield of BRRI dhan45. BRRI dhan29 responded up to 80 kg K/ha. In native soil K condition, BRRI dhan28 produced the highest grain yield of 3.36 t/ha, which was significantly higher than that of BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan45. Increasing the rates of K fertilizer with increasing the uptake of K. During T.Aman, the highest K uptake was noted 57 kg/ha in the treatment which received 80 kg K/ha while in Boro season the highest K uptake was noted 62kg/ha in the treatment which received 80 kg K/ha in case of BRRI dhan28. An apparent K balance was calculated as the different between the amount of K added through fertilizer and irrigation water, and the amount of K removed by crops annually. It is shown that K balance was positive in case of K40 and above. The amount of absorbed K in rice straw was lower than those of previous years. As a result the total K uptake by rice crops was lower and it resulted a positive K balances in those treatments where a higher dose of K was added.
