BJRI has developed a low cost and economic bleaching method for jute fiber, jute ribbon and jute products with different types of bleaching reagent. Spray bleaching technique was done on low grade jute fiber of BWE in the experimental mill with stabilizer, emulsion and hydrogen per-oxide 5% (on the weight of material). In spray bleaching method bleaching temperature is less than conventional method and no extra time is required for bleaching since this function is done simultaneously with the batching time. Since no water is required in spray bleaching method for washing, loss of strength is less and whiteness of bleached jute products increased by 66% compared to unbleached jute products. So, this spray bleaching method can be applied in jute mills. This method is economic and commercially feasible for bleaching of jute and jute products.

Postharvest and Agro-processing
To develop the methods of dyeing, printing and appropriate wet processes for jute goods.
Bleaching and softening of low grade jute fiber in cheap way.
To find out economic and cost effective bleaching method for jute and jute products.
Development of produce oriented bleaching method for jute and jute products.
Bleaching of jute and jute products with higher photo stability and absorbent power.
Low grade jute fiber of BWE and carpet backing cloth materials for treatment with hydrogen per-oxide, emulsion, sodium carbonate and stabilizer prestogen of commercial grade were used in this experiments. The bleaching liquor was prepared using hydrogen per-oxide, stabilizer, emulsion, sodium carbonate with the ratio of 5%, 1%, 25% and 0.5% at 28-30 degree C temperature and the pH value of the solution was 10.5 – 11.0 respectively. The prepared bleaching liquor was sprayed on the low grade jute fiber through the softener machine. After the processing jute fiber were batched piles on the floor with polythene cover at room temperature. At the time of batching the temperature was raised to 50-55 degree C within 20-24 hours. After batching the fibers were exposed and processed in the breaker card, finisher card, different drawing frame, and finally spinning through the spinning frame to yarn production. Similarly, the prepared bleaching liquors were sprayed on the fabrics through spray machine and piled for 24 hours with polythene cover and then the fabrics were exposed to open air. The physical changes that took place in unbleached and bleached fiber and yarns properties were evaluated by determining their physico-chemical and physico-mechanical properties by different standard method at standard temperature and humidity.

Spray bleaching technique was done in the experiment mill at laboratory condition using new stabilizer and hydrogen peroxide. Whiteness, loss of strength and residual pH value of bleached fiber, sliver and yarn were measured after definite intervals. Better results were obtained in the mill trial experiments than laboratory experiment. In this process whiteness of bleached jute products were increased up to 63% with minimum loss of strength. Moreover, this process is less environmentally hazardous than conventional bleaching method as no water is required for washing and no waste residual bleached liquor is produced. For diversified product development, bleaching is very important. Spray bleaching is a new technology for bleaching of jute materials with non aqueous systems. The result will be very helpful in jute processing industries to reduce manufacturing cost.
