A comparative performance evaluations study was conducted with BRRI CDT, Alim CDT and Bhai Bhai CDT. The study was conducted with BRRI dhan29 and the straw length of paddy was 45 cm for all trial. The total grain losses including cylinder, separating and scattering losses of the BRRI, Alim, Bhai-Bhai threshers and manual threshing were 0.87, 1.57, 1.72 and 5.22 percent respectively. The winnowing efficiency of the threshers was calculated 97, 91 and 91 percent for BRRI, Alim and Bhai-Bhai threshers respectively. Threshing capacity of the BRRI thresher was lowest because of less engine power. Threshing cost in terms of Tk/hr was found 221, 331, 343 and 104 for BRRI thresher, Alim thresher, Bhai-Bhai thresher and manual threshing. BRRI CDT saved more cost (82.98%) over manual threshing followed by Alim (79.58%) thresher. Break-even analysis showed that Bhai-Bhai CDT thresher is more economical for the farmers having only small holding 1.15 ha followed by Alim CDT and BRRI CDT.

• To compare the performance of different type of close drum threshers over manual threshing

Three model of thresher namely BRRI close drum thresher (BRRI CDT), Alim close drum thresher (Alim Industries limited, Sylhet made close drum thresher) (Alim CDT), Bhai Bhai close drum thresher (Bhai Bhai Engineering workshop, Netrakona made) (Bhai Bhai CDT) were use for conducting the study. The study was conducted during Boro season, 2008 at the farmer’s house of Netrakona. BRRI dhan29 was used as threshing materials. Paddy was collected from same field to minimize the error. The straw length of paddy was 45 cm for all trial. Yield of paddy was 7.46 ton/ha at 14% M.C (wb). Initially 40 kg of un-threshed paddy was threshed to calculate the percent of grain losses including cylinder losses, separating losses and spilled losses. Percent of cylinder losses are known as percent of un-threshed paddy remain in panicle and separating loss are calculated in respect of deposit grain under the threshed straw. Contrary, the spilled losses are known as scattering loss in respective of grains collected forward from the threshed straw. During study, grains in the out of 2.5 m radius distance from center of the thresher were considered as scattered grain. Uniform feeding was maintained for each thresher. To calculate the threshing capacity of the threshers, farmers practices was used to operate the thresher without any motivation. Operating cost of the selected threshers was calculated to determine the comparative economic performance of the threshers and compare also with manual threshing. Paddy of the same field was used to calculate the manual threshing loss, threshing efficiency. In case of manual threshing, percent of un-threshed paddy loss was calculated considering the amount of paddy remain in the panicle in compare with un-threshed panicle. Randomly 100 threshed and un-threshed panicles were used to calculate the un-threshed paddy loss.

The performances of the selected threshers are effective compare to the manual threshing. However, BRRI thresher is more economical considering all cost involved in threshing including cost of threshing loss followed by Alim thresher, Bhai-Bhai thresher and manual threshing. The break-even use levels per year of the BRRI CDT, Alim CDT and Bhai-Bhai CDT were 1.37, 1.22 and 1.15 ha/yr respectively compare to the manual threshing method. With the increase in annual use in ha, the cost of threshing using mechanical threshers decreased exponentially from 1 to 4 ha and then the reduction of threshing cost was only slender. Bhai-Bhai CDT thresher is more economical for the farmers having only small holding 1.15 ha followed by Alim CDT and BRRI CDT. Therefore, farmers can adopt any of the selected threshers.
