Nutrient Requirement for New Promising T.aman Lines by Site Specific Nutrient Management (ssnm).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nutrient management and rice genotypes showed significant interaction effects on grain yield. It was observed that the grain yield of the advance lines BR7323-4B-1, BR7517-2R-2-1 and BR7517-2R-27-3 were significantly lower than the check varieties in complete NPK treatment.

Objectives:

To apply SSNM technique for the determination of fertilizer rate of promising BRRI rice varieties and advance lines in a particular site.

Methodology:

The experiment was set to determine the requirement of major nutrients (N, P & K) in rice through SSNM technique. Five advance T.Aman lines were tested with BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39 and BINA dhan7 as checks. Twenty five days old seedlings were transplanted in west byde, BRRI farm, Gazipur. Four nutrient management, namely, NPK, -N, -K and -P were imposed as treatments. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications, assigning nutrient management in main plots and variety in subplots. The NPK plot received N, P and K @ 62, 13 and 11 kg/ha on soil test basis (STB). Each of these three nutrients was omitted in the -N, -P and -K treatments respectively. The unit plot size was 4.2 X 3 m². At maturity, grain sample from 5m2 area was collected, weighed and adjusted to 14% moisture for yield calculation. The nutrient requirement by SSNM method for the genotypes were calculated assuming that 18 kg N, 2.5 kg P and 20 kg K are required per ton grain yield and the recovery of applied fertilizer nutrient by rice plant is 40% N, 25% P and 45% K. The difference between the grain yield in complete NPK treatment and -N, -P and -K were multiplied by these factors.

Achievement/Findings:

Two advance lines (BR7323-4B-1 and BR-7873-5*(Nils)-51-HR6) showed significant yield reduction due to omission of K. Similarly, omission of N significantly reduced grain yield in two genotypes (BR-7873-5*(Nils)-51-HR6 and BRRI dhan39). On the other hand, no significant yield reduction was observed due to omission of P. However, out of the three major nutrients, the omission of K caused highest grain yield reduction (avg. 0.6 t/ha). This implies that the application rate of K should be enhanced for higher yield. The predicted doses of N and P for the observed yield by SSNM technique were much lower for most of the genotypes. BR7517-2R-27-3 does not require application of N, P or K for the observed yield. Most of the genotypes does not require additional P, except a few with very small P requirement (1-3 kg/ha). For a target yield of around 3.00 t/ha in BRRI farm, Gazipur, three advance lines namely, BR7323-4B-1, BR7517-2R-2-1 and BR7517-2R-27-3 requires only moderate K application in addition to soil native nutrients. On the other hand, BR-7873-5*(Nils)-51-HR6, IR74371-70-1-1 and the check varieties requires a good amount of N application for a target yield of about 3.50 t/ha. These findings were observed in one year experiment. Further study was required for confirmation of the results
