Evaluation of Cimmyt Elite Tropical Late Yellow Normal and Qpm Hyprids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Combined analysis were carried out to test the performance and yield potentiality of twenty eight CIMMYT developed normal and QPM hybrids which were evaluated across five different agro-ecological locations in Bangladesh. Results revealed that significant variations existed among all the entries for the characters under study viz. grain yield, days to tasseling, days to silking, days to maturity, plant height and ear height. The mean sum of square obtained from combined analysis of variance also showed the genetic variability among the genotypes and environment for all the characters. Genotype x Environment interaction was also significant for all the characters. Considering overall performance two hybrids were selected as promising material.

Objectives:

Evaluation of CIMMYT tropical late yellow QPM and normal maize hybrids to select higher yielding hybrid(s) under Bangladesh condition for releasing as variety

Methodology:

Twenty eight CIMMYT developed normal and QPM hybrids and two local checks namely BHM-3 and BHM-5 were evaluated at this study. Seeds were sown on 2 December at Joydebpur, 12 December at Burirhat, 25 December at Jaldhaka, 24 November at Sherpur and 23 November at Hathazari during rabi 2007-08. Experimental design was alpha lattice with three replications. The unit plot size was maintained at 5.0 × 1.5 m and spacing was 75 × 20 cm between row to row and hill to hill respectively. After seedling emergence one healthy plant per hill was kept. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 kg/ha at N, P₂O₅, K₂0, S and Zn respectively. All intercultural operations were done according to the necessity. Data on yield and other morphological characters were recorded on whole plot basis. For convenience plot yield was converted to t/ha. All collected data were subjected to analysis using MSTATC program.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean highest grain yield was obtained from the Entry 9 and Entry 15 across the locations. Other two entries viz Entry 25 and Entry 28 also out yielded significantly than local check. Considering overall performance two entries viz. Entry 9 and Entry 15 were selected as promising material.
