A Comparative Study on Productive and Performance of Red Chittagong Cattle In-situ and Ex-situ

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted with an attempt to investigate and to comp are the productive and reproductive performances of Red Chittagong Cattle in-situ and ex-situ condition. For this purpose data were collected on a total of 237 individual cows. Data on different productive e and reproductive tracts of cows rearing in RCC community areas in five upazilas (Anwara, Chandanaish, Patia, Rawzan and Satkania) were collected with a designed data sheet. Besides this, for comparison data were collected on 49 RCC cows reared at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute Research Farm. Result showed that the overall age at first heat was 32.10±0.02 months in in-situ and 18.83±2.02 months in ex-situ condition. In in-situ condition age at first heat almost similar in Anwar, Chandanaish and Rawzan with the range 32.46±0.35 months to 32.98±0.16 months but was significantly lower in Portia and Satanic (25.33 months). Age at first calving was 41.56±0.40 and 31.34±0.98 months and varies from 41.56±0.40 to 42.20±0.16 months and 28.03±0.17 to 36.13±0.98 months in in-situ and ex-situ condition respectively, calving interval was 12.74±0.11 and 11.26±0.20 to 12.17±0.33 months. In both the cases male calves were found heavier than the opposite sex.

Objectives:

To compare the reproductive and productive performance of RCC both in in-situ and ex-situ management condition.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two different Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) of Bangladesh. These were southeastern hilly and coastal areas and a part of eastern plain land (AEZ-23) and Modhupur Tract (AEZ-28). For in-situ conservation five upazilas of Chittagong district (Anwara, Chandanaish, Potia, Rawzan and Satkania) and Bangladesh rearing RCC cow based on their availability was selected. The community farmers were delivered with inputs such as pure RCC semen for insemination of cows, health care facilities; training and dissemination of technology, feed supplement and fodder seeds etc. In ion-situ management system the RCC were managed by the farmer himself or his family members. Routine vaccination of Anthrax, BQ and FMD were performed to all the cattle of the community farms. Farmers were also provided with sufficient doses of deforming tables. Vaccination programme were done twice a year and that of deforming thrice a year with project cost. Under ex-situ conservation the animals were intensively managed in research farm of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute. For in-situ study purpose data on a total of 237 individual RCC cows belonging to different ages and parities were collected. For recording data the farmers were trained accordingly. The scientific officers of the Red Chittagong Cattle Breed Improvement and Conservation project monitored the data recording once an week. In the ex-situ study, a total of 49 cows of different ages were selected. Data on productive and reproductive traits of cows reared ex-situ were recorded daily through a registered khata where the researches recorded the information of individual animal. Data of different reproduction and production potential were recorded. All the traits were analyzed using General Linear Model of computer packages SPSS.16. The Least Squares Analysis of variance was performed for all the traits and the Least Squares means of different traits were tested by Duyncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) to determine the effect of various factors.

Achievement/Findings:

The reproductive and productive performances of RCC were satisfactory in both ex-situ and in-situ conditions. Therefore, large-scale conservation and improvement programme with RCC would be important to continue under both in-situ conditions.
