Maintenance of Pure Lines and Development of Feeding & Management Guidelines for BLRI Layer-1: Study-1. Improvement of Pure Line Chicken Through Selective Breeding.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute to improve the genetic potentiality and to conserve the pure layer lines. Data collected from the breeder female on, age at 1st lay (d), body weight ()38wk), egg production (up to 45 weeks) and egg weight (38 wks). Female were finally selected on adult body weight of four pure lines chicken of White Leghorn (WLH), White Rock (WR), Barred Plymouth Rock (BPR) and Rhode Island Red (RIR) at 38 weeks of age were 1370.1±21.4m 1719.0±6.5, 1701.8±18.8 and 1612.5±17.8g respectively. Age of 1st5 lay was lower in WR 152±0.8d but higher in WLH170±2.3d. The hen-day egg production percentage up to 48 weeks of age was highest in WR 82.18±0.88 followed by WHL, RIR and BPR. The egg fertility was highest in RIR 91.46±1.18 followed by WR, WLH BPR and the difference was significant (p>.06). Highest rate of dead in germ was found in WR egg 4.20±0.92 followed by RIR, BPR and WLH (p>0.01). The culled chicks percentage during hatching was highest in RIR 11.25±1.44 follwoed by BPR, WR and WLH (p>0.05). The highest rate of good chicks were found in WLH 82.71±2.81 compare to WR 82.18±2.42, RIR 70.31±2.29 and BPR 69.69±2.88 and the difference was significant (P<0.01). So, White Rock is superior in terms of egg production, Rhode Island Red for fertility and White Leghorn for hatchability.

Objectives:

1. Conservation, Multiplication and improvement of pure lines. 2. To compare the productive and reproductive performances of pure lines under intensive management. 3. To improve the genetic potentiality of pure lines for important economic traits through selective breeding and 4. To recommend suitable techniques for the improvement of pure lines.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Research Farm under Poultry Production Research Division of Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 3000 pedigree hatched day old chicks (500 from each line) were identified individually by using wing band. Firstly 250 sound healthy day old chick were selected. On the growing period 85 males and 220 females, were selected on the basis of physical appearance. In the adult stage 85 males and 200 females but finally 17 males and 85 females were selected on the basis of selection index. Body weight has been measured for 10 males and 10 females of each breed randomly to have the average body weight at 0/1/2/4/6/8/10/16/18/2024/28 and 32 weeks of age and all birds at 38 weeks of age. Standard feeding program with nutrient supply according to age was practiced during the both rearing and production period. All birds were fed diets containing 17.50% crude protein (CP) and 2750 kcal/kg metabolizable energy (ME) per kg diet during laying period. Prepared mating and AI plan and had done some other worked; checked selected hens, checked selected cocks, changed of selected cocks and rearranged of selected hens and cocks. Data of this study were analyzes by using univariate GLM procedure of SPSS. The differences in means ere tested using LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the above productive and reproductive parameters, it may be concluded that White Rock is superior in terms of egg production, Rhode Island Red for fertility and White Leghorn for hatchability. For the conservation of valuable parent lines, donated by JICA, the selection and breeding programme should therefore be continued to help multiplication and dissemination for producing as terminal layer stock.
