Upscaling of Direct Wet-seeded Rice (dwsr) Using Drum Seeder at Farmers Filed.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to upscaling of direct wet-seeded rice (DWSR) using drum seeder at farmers filed. BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were used for the program. The plot size was about one bigha. One half of the plot was under DWSR and the other was under conventional transplanting methods. In both the varieties, DWSR produced higher yield over conventional TPR method in all location. The higher yield increase (25%) due to DWSR was observed in Manda of Naoga district where as the lowest (3.48%) was observed in Khetlal of Juypurhat district. The study on 45 farmers in districts and ecosystem showed that the farmers will be able to derive an additional amount of Tk. 8787 and Tk. 2904 per ha from DWSR over the conventional transplanted rice

Objectives:

Objective of this study was to upscaling of direct wet-seeded rice (DWSR) using drum seeder at farmers filed.

Methodology:

BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were used for the program. The plot size was about one bigha (33 decimal). The plot of the respective farmer was divided into two equal parts. One half of the plot was under DWSR and the other was under conventional transplanting methods. For estimation of grain yield, samples of 10 m² from direct wet-seeded plots and transplanted plots were harvested. Grain yield were converted to t/ha adjusted to 14% moisture content. Growth duration was recorded. Farmer’s reactions about DWSR were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean grain yield growth duration were influenced due to seeding method. In both the varieties, DWSR produced higher yield over conventional TPR method in all location. In case of BRRI dhan28, BWSR produced about 16% higher grain yield and the range of yield increase was 3% to 25%. The higher yield increase (25%) due to DWSR was observed in Manda of Naoga district where as the lowest (3.48%) was observed in Khetlal of Juypurhat district. Averaged over the locations, growth duration in DWSR of BRRI dhan28 was reduced by 16 days. In case of BRRI dhan29, the same trend was found as observed in BRRI dhan28 by DWSR. However, the yield increase was lower in case BRRI dhan29 than BRRI dhan28. DWSR produced 10% higher yield over conventional TPR method in BRRI dhan29. The range of yield increase by DWSR was 4.67% to 28.15% in BRRI dhan29. On an average, the growth duration of BRRI dhan29 was reduced by 11 days in DWSR. Socio-economic analysis on DWSR: a detail socio-economic study was conducted by a team led Agricultural Economics division in which Farm Management and Adaptive Research Division were involved. Complete reports are given Agricultural Economics division. However, the study on 45 farmers in districts and ecosystem showed that the farmers will be able to derive an additional amount of Tk. 8787 and Tk. 2904 per ha from DWSR over the conventional transplanted rice for the single and double cropped area, respectively during boro season. One of the causes of relatively low return from double cropped system is that return N from DWSR is less in this system.
