Diversity of Adaptive Fishing Gear and Their Impact on Riverine Fishery and Environment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen different types of net of four categories, three types of trap and two types of hook and line were identified. The Chor Ghera Jal (one type of surrounding net) had the highest CPUE (40 kg/haul) followed by Behundi jal (Set Bag Net) and Katha Ber jal (small mesh seine net) having CPUE value 20.42 kg/haul and 15.41kg/haul respectively. CPUE of different type's gill nets ranges from 0.5-10 kg depending on their species selectivity. Average CPUE of Pangus chai and Ichar chai were 20 kg and 0.25 kg respectively. Among the identified gears in the study, 5 gears were found to be shown negative effect on species diversity of riverine ecosystem. The estimated % of catch composition of 20 FAD 'Katha' during study period were 45% Crustacean, 26% Siluriform, 20% Perciform and the remaining 9% represented Cypriniformes, Synbanchiformes and Clupeiformes

Objectives:

To categories the various fishing crafts and gears used traditionally and commercially in the rivers; to determine the characteristics of fishing gears; to determine the CPUE and catch composition; to identify the safe the detrimental gears based on their mesh size, catch and mode of operation to formulate fishing gear regulations for riverine waters under national fishery law; to create an awareness of the factors affecting the health of the riverine fisheries;

Methodology:

Detailed data on gear characteristics and data on categorizing the gear has been collected monthly from some pre-selected sampling points of the upper Meghna, lower Meghna and the Padma. The sampling points of the upper Meghna were, Kuliar Chor, Voirob, Gazaria, Shatnol, Mohonpur, Akhlaspur, Amirabad, Anandabazar and Chandpur Puran Bazar. Sampling points of the lower Meghna were, Nilkomol, Chor Voirobi, Haimchor, Kaliganj, Chor Ludhua, Alekjander, Ramgoti, Hatia,Ilisha,Monpura. Sampling points of the Padma were Sureswar, Vaggokul, Mawa, Paturia, Pakshi, Godagari. Apart from the above mentioned places data has also been collected from some important branch river of The Meghna like Kirtonkhola, Bishkhali, Arialkha . Characteristics of fishing gears and traps were identified in terms of length, width, mesh size, number of fishermen operating the gear, mode of operation and intensity for the categorization of the traps and gears. Determination of catch per unit effort and species composition was estimated by in situ observation. Catch composition (% by number and by weight) for each type of gear was recorded through on the spot examination of catch from the respective gear.

Achievement/Findings:

Exploiting wild fish from the Riverine waters various types of gears are in operation since time immemorial. Many of these gears are now being used in indiscriminate catching of juveniles and adolescents before they attain legal marketable size, generally 23 cm in length. Unplanned use of a few gears has posed a serious threat to the natural recruitment process in the riverine waters. So understand the types of crafts, active and passive gears are in operation currently in the riverine ecosystem, determining the optimum mesh size for some selective gears, estimation of CPUE, catch composition and gear efficiency and finally identification of harmful/detrimental gear were the major output of the present research work.
