Performance of Sugarcane with Some High Valued Crops as First and Mungbean as Second Intercrops in Paired Row System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiments were conducted in the farmers field at Sreepur and Kaligonj locations during the cropping season 2007-2008 under Madhupur Tract. The studies were under taken to develop appropriate double inter cropping packages for maximize the productivity and economic return from sugarcane and companion crops. Different four intercrops viz. potato, onion, garlic and mustard as first inter crops followed by mungbean as second inter crop in paired row sugarcane were grown. In Sreepur, the highest (74.49×103ha-1) millable cane was obtained from onion- mungbean inter crops combination followed by potato-mungbean (68.25×103ha-1 ) combination with paired row cane. The highest yield 122.80 t ha-1 and 121.60 t ha-1 were obtained from potato-mungbean and onion-mungbean combination. In Kaligonj, the highest millable cane (95.24×103ha-1) and yield (228.30 t ha-1) both were obtained from garlic-mungbean intercrops combination with paired row cane. The highest adjusted cane yield 194.53 t ha-1 and 256.20 t ha-1 were recorded from potato-mungbean combination at Sreepur and Kaligonj respectively. Overall results showed that intercropping with potato, onion and garlic is superior to only cane cultivation and the practice helps to earn additional income in the said Madhupur Tract and thus make cane cultivation more remunerative.

Objectives:

1. Development an appropriate double inter cropping package for paired row sugarcane

2. Maximizing the productivity and economic return from sugarcane and companion crops.

3. To sustain sugarcane cultivation, ensuring higher production and maximum profit through cultivation of inter crops.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted in the farmers field at Sreepur and Kaligonj, under Gazipur district during 2007-2008 cropping season. The experiments was designed by RCB and replicated three times. The unit plot size was 8m×7m in both locations. The site represents Madhupur Tract under AEZ 28. After final land preparation, Sugarcane setts of variety Amrita were planted on 26 October in Sreepur and 27 October in Kaligonj, 2007. Two budded setts were placed in trench 25cm distance in paired row of 60 cm apart while the distance between two paired rows of cane (PRC) was 140 cm. The treatments were included in the experiments were only paired row cane (T0), paired row cane + Potato- Mungbean(T1), paired row cane + Onion- Mungbean (T2), paired row cane + Garlic-Mungbean (T3) and paired row cane + Mustard-Mungbean (T4). Recommended fertilizers and management practices for sugarcane and other inter crops were followed under the study.
