Feasibility Study on Appropriate Mechanization at Gazipur Sadar Thana, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In a study on appropriate agricultural mechanization at Bhabanipur village of Gazipur Sadar thana forund that the demand of labour was high from ‘Baisakh’ to ‘Shrabon’, peak exists at the turnaround time between Aus and Aman. Farmers having own power tiller could increase their total cultivated area and also cropping intensity. Whereas farmers having only shallow tube well could increase their cropping intensity.

Methodology:

A feasibility study on appropriate agricultural mechanization was conducted at Bhabanpur village of Gazipur sadar thana. It is located to the north of national park and is surrounded by Bhawal forest.

Achievement/Findings:

The study showed that only 5% of the surveyed farmers have power tillers. In aggregate there was no draft power shortage but about 14.6% farmers have no draft power of their own. Another 17% farmers have only milking cows as draft power and 48.6% of the total bovine animals are cow which reflects real shortages of the draft power in that area. The reasons were: i) Use of cow as draft animal associated with reduced fertility and milk yields. ii) As cows are weaker than bullocks, the quality of tillage is poor unless animals work for longer periods. The demand of labor was more from ‘Baisakh’ to ‘Shrabon’. The peak exists at the turnaround time between Aus & Aman. Then labor shortage is met up by hiring labour from neighboring districts (Jamalpur, Mymenshingh, etc.), with wages of about Tk.40/- per day. The demand of labor was less during ‘Asshwin’ & ‘Kartic’ with wages of about tk. 25-30 per day. Almost all farm families had the traditional farm equipment’s. Again, the study showed that the farmers who had power tiller their total cultivated area and also cropping intensity was increased. On the other hand, farmers who have STW only cropping intensity of those farmers were increased. i) Power tiller can be introduced to prepare land for aman cultivation. ii) Thresher for threshing Aus can also be introduce
