Industrial and Farmers Level Extension of BRRI Developed Agricultural Machinery

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field demonstration and training was conducted in Feni, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur and Rangpur districts. BRRI rice-wheat thresher was demonstrated among the farmers. The thresher worked efficiently for wheat and the observers were satisfied with the thresher performance. The observed proposed some modifications on the thresher.

Objectives:

i) To stimulate the local manufacturers for manufacturing of the successful machineries. ii) To evaluate the agricultural machinery and identify different parameters including fatigue, strength, reliability etc. of the machine. iii) To extend agricultural machinery through demonstration in the farmers field

Methodology:

Nipun Shilpha Karkhana, Feni was trained to manufacture BRRI pump and weeder. They were supplied design, drawing, Specification and pattern of the pump and the weeder. Accordingly, They produced to pumps one was sold and the other one ready for sale Field demonstration: Field demonstration of BRRI developed Agricultural machinery was held at Mohammadpur, Durgapur and Pirgong of Thakurgoan district, wheat Research center, Dinajpur and Alamnagar of Rangpur district. BRRI developed Multicrop power thresher, Hydrotiller, Weeder Diaphragm pump and drum seeder were demonstrated in presence of the farmers extension workers,BADC Engineers, BARI Scientists, Grameen Bank officers etc. After demonstration, everybody showed their keen interest regarding the machine performance. The DD of agricultural extension of Thakurgoan and Rangpur districts proposed to manufacture the multicrop power locally. Grameen Krishi Foundation of Rangpur purchased one BRRI multicrop power thresher from the Diabetic Association workshop for threshing wheat. A demonstration of the multicrop power thresher was held at the OFRD station of BARI at Rangpur before the handing over the thresher to the Grameen Krishi Foundation. The local farmers and prospecting buyers, the OFRD officers, and Grameen Krishi Foundation personnel were present in the demonstration.

Achievement/Findings:

The thresher worked efficiently for wheat and the observers were satisfied with the thresher performance. However the participants suggested following modification regarding wheat thresher. i) To produce BRRI developed wheat/Rice thresher in their local workshop. ii) To sell and market the machine with agricultural loan. iii) To modify the machine to reduce labourer number. iv) To take appropriate measure to save straw so that farmers can use it for roofing purpose. v) To overcome back throwing. vii) To take necessary measure to protect the engine from dust and trash.
