Cage Culture of Monosex Tilapia, Thai Sharpunti and Thai Koi in Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Suitable stocking density of Thai sarpunti (B. gonionotus) in net cages at Kaptai lake was assessed. After 120 days of trial, average production was 1.65 kg/ m³, 1.52 kg/ m3, 1.36kg/ m³ and 1.18 kg/ m3 in 3T1 (30), T₂(50), T3 (70), and T₄ (90), respectively. The production and survival rate of T₁ were higher than other treatment. So the stocking density of 30 fish/m³ can be recommended for the cage culture of Thai sharpunti in Kaptai lake.

Objectives:

A. To identify new fish species suitable for cage culture in Kaptai lake

B. To optimize the suitable stocking density for different fish species in cage culture

C. To determine the appropriate fingerling size at stocking in cages

D. To find out the extent of socio-economic status of the fish farmers during the fishing prohibited period in Kaptai lake.

Methodology:

Floating net cages, having an area of 3x3x2m made of plastic net (mesh size 2.5 cm) and knot-less polyethylene net (mesh size 1.1 cm) were installed in Kaptai lake. The whole structure was fixed with bamboo raft and tied with anchors at both side by nylon rope to facilitate easy floating of cages depending on water level. Fingerlings of Thai sarpunti (B. gonionotus) with 5-10 g weight stocked @ 30, 50, 70 and 90 fish/m3. Feeding was done regularly using pelleted semi-buoyant feed @ 5 % of body weight, twice daily for all treatments. Water quality parameters were optimum and no deviation was found among the treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

Suitability of some important fish species i.e Thai sarpunti for cage culture in Kaptai lake was determined. More suitable and environment friendly cage culture technology was developed. Socio-economic condition of the fish farmers will be sustained during the fishing prohibited period in Kaptai lake. Similar trail of cage culture with other species may be conducted in future.
