Validation of Some High Yielding Rice Genotypes in Jhum Cultivation, Aus, 2004.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to Validation of some high yielding rice genotypes in Jhum cultivation. Rice was grown as mixed or over inter-cropping with crops like cotton, Zinger, turmeric, aroids, vegetable etc Hill tract districts which is called Jhum cultivation. The promising breeding lines could not perform better than BR24, BR26, and BRRI dhan27. In Bandarban Sadar, the yields of all varieties, especially the lines were very low. However, the farmers also grew BRRI dhan28 in one location which produced better grain yield.

Objectives:

Objective of this study was to Validation of some high yielding rice genotypes in Jhum cultivation.

Methodology:

Rice was grown as mixed or over inter-cropping with crops like cotton, Zinger, turmeric, aroids, vegetable etc. Fertilizers, weeding, and controlling of insects-pests were followed as per the local by the farmers. Jhum cultivation is very much familiar in Hill tract districts of Bangladesh.

Achievement/Findings:

The results were impressive and average yields of BR24,BR26, BRRI dhan27 were respectively 1.95,2.06 and 2.04 t/ha. Those yields were double than the yield of the locally adopted varieties like Hemarange, Radeiya, Binni Dhan and Madhumalati. However, the farmers also grew BRRI dhan28 in one location which produced better grain yield. ARD had taken up validation program with BRRI dhan24 in 2001; now farmers are cultivating BRRI dhan24 by themselves in Jhum system. The promising breeding lines could not perform better than BR24, BR26, and BRRI dhan27. In Bandarban Sadar, the yields of all varieties, especially the lines were very low. Seeds retained by the farmers: Bandarban: A total 55 kg seeds of BR24, BR26, and BRRI dhan27 were retained by the farmers and they intended to disseminate the seed among 15 farmers. Rangamati: A total 35 kg of BR24, BRRI dhan27 were retained by the farmers and they intended to disseminate the seed among 18 farmers. Khagrachari: A total 48 kg of BR24, BRRI dhan27 were retained by the farmers and they intended to disseminate the seed among 22 farmers.
