Efficacy of newly designed four multiple capture traps, for rat control, were evaluated inside at the rat enclosure in vertebrate pest division, BARI, Gazipur during the period of September, 2012 to May, 2013. Of these, three multiple capture traps namely, multiple capture trap-1,live pitfall trap-3 and live pitfall trap-4 performed very well ranging 80% to 90% success for rat capture.

Pest Management
i) To develop the effective multiple capture traps for controlling rats
ii)Developing the most suitable and cost effective multiple capture traps
Trap preparation: Four multiple capture live traps were designed and fabricated at the workshop of the Farm Machinery and Post-harvest Process Engineering Division of BARI, Gazipur during 2012-13. Multiple Capture live Trap - 1:The multiple capture live trap-1 is fabricated with GI wire (2.6 mm). Weight of the multiple capture live trap-1 is 3.5 kg. The functional parts of the machine are (1) Frame; (2) Lower plate; (3) Entrance cone and (4) Trap. The multiple capture live trap-2 is, more or less similar to the multiple capture live trap -1, fabricated with GI Aluminum GI wire (diameter 2.6 mm). The difference between two traps is based on entrance gate and placement of the trap. It is placed horizontally on the ground. Other parts like frame, lower plate and trap are same in two traps. Weight of the multiple capture live trap-2 is also 3.5 kg. The functional parts of the machine are (1) Frame; (2) Lower plate; (3) Entrance gate and (4) Trap. The live pit fall trap-3 is fabricated with GI wire(diameter 2.6 mm) and a container tin. Weight of the life trap was 2.7 kg. The functional parts of the machine are divided into two parts; (1) outer frame and (2) inner frame. The live pit fall trap-4 is fabricated with GI wire and tin. Weight of the life trap is 1.8 kg. The functional parts of the machine are (1) Frame; (2) Lower plate; (3) Entrance cone, (4) Trap and (5) Exit gate. Efficacy test: This test was conducted inside the rat enclosure (6m X 4m) in VPD April to June 2013. Bandicota bengalensis was used as test animal. The rats were kept under the laboratory condition for at least one week for adaptation. All animals were starved for 6 hours before applying the treatment. Five rats were released into the enclosure. Newly designed multiple capture trap was set inside the enclosure. Bread was used as bait material. The trap was set in every evening and the data were recorded in the following morning. This test was conducted up to 15 days i.e. 15 trap nights. Percent trap success for newly designed multiple capture trap was calculated.
Research Report-2012-13, Vertebrate Pest Division, BARI
Forty thousand only
Multiple Capture live Trap - 1:
The per cent trap success of newly designed multiple capture live trap -1 was about 90%. Rats entered in to the trap successfully but they could not come out due to narrow space between the wires of inside cone and they were also faced by the sharp end of the wires of the trap.
Multiple Capture live Trap -2:
The per cent trap success of newly designed multiple capture live trap -2 was 0%. The reason of no success was that most of the rats could not guess the way to enter into the trap as the gate was hanging along with the side wall resembling no entry point actually.
Live pit fall Trap- 3:
The per cent trap success of newly designed live pit fall trap-3 was about 85%. Rats could easily jump down into the trap to take food placed in it. They tried to come out from the trap by jumping repeatedly but fell down by its slippery vertical wall and its high height as well.
Live pitfall Trap -4
The per cent trap success of newly designed multiple capture live trap -4 was about 80%. Rats could easily jump down into the trap to take food placed in it. They tried to come out from the trap but fell down by its slippery suspended conical wall placed on the upper portion of the trap.
