Changing Pattern in Limnology of Kaptai Lake

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Monthly variation of air temperature ranged from 18.9⁰C to 33.0⁰C (x ± SD:27.97 ±3.08⁰C). Highest air temperature (33⁰C) was recorded in September, 2012 and the lowest (18.9⁰C) in January, 2012. The fluctuation of water temperature varied from 19.5 to 32.9⁰ C ( x ± SD: 27.09 ± 5.89⁰ C).The maximum water temperature (31.5°C) was recorded in October, 2012 and minimum (19.5⁰C) in February, 2013. The pH of water always found to be alkaline in nature and it varied between 6.15 and 8.62 (x ± SD : 7.6 ± 0.52 ). Free CO₂ ranged between 1.61 to 4.32mg/l (x ± SD : 2.92 ± 0.60 mg/l). The maximum (4.32 mg/l) value was recorded in April, 2013 and minimum (1.61mg/l) in July, 2012. The value of Dissolved Oxygen was found to fluctuate from the minimum of 5.01 mg/l to the maximum of 7.84 mg/l (x ± SD : 6.41 ± 0.51 mg/l). The highest value was recorded in November (7.84 mg/l) 2012 and the lowest in June (5.01 mg/l) 2013. It also showed significant strong positive correlation with the air and water temperature (r= 0.358, 0.482, p<0.05).

Objectives:

1. To know the present status of physical, chemical and biological parameters in the ecosystem of Kaptai lake;

2. To assess the pattern and extent of changes of the parameters;

3. To find out the seasonal succession and relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton in Kaptai lake.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in five areas of Rangamati district like i) Rangamati Sadar ii) Kapta iiii) Barkal iv) Langadhu and v) Naniarchar. Physical water quality parameters included temp., transparency, TSS and TDS. Rainfall and surface elevation data was collected from PD, Kaptai district. Chemical parameters i.e. DO, CO₂, alkalinity, hardness, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, BoD and CoD and biology parameters i.e. plankton and benthos were recorded. Also seasonal succession of plankton population and relationship of phytoplankton and zooplankton was estimated.

Achievement/Findings:

Regular physicochemical and biological parameters of kaptai lake was determined through year round study. The changing trend of water quality could represent future policy guide lines. Primary production of kaptai lake ecosystem is now comprehensible.
