Adaptive Research Division, BRRI

Objective of this study was to Seed Production and Distribution to the farmers for rapid expansion of new potential BRRI varieties at farm level. Plot size for each variety was generally about 1 bigha (33 decimals). Seeds of the selected varieties were sent to the respective DAE office with production package. For grain yield estimation, 10 m2 samples were harvested and yield was expressed as t/ha at 14% moisture level. Out of a total production of about 24.5 tons of seeds, the farmers retained about 5.5 tons for further propagation and it was about 22% of the total production. A total of 554 farmers showed their interest about the varieties and 168 farmers expressed their desire to have seeds to cultivate the varieties in the next season. Most of the farmers showed positive response about the BRRI varieties. Earliness, higher yield and better grain quality for higher market price were cited in common by the farmers for acceptance.

Seed Production and Distribution to the farmers for rapid expansion of new potential BRRI varieties at farm level.

Plot size for each variety was generally about 1 bigha (33 decimals). Seeds of the selected varieties were sent to the respective DAE office with production package. Fertilizer and signboards were supplied. One scientist from BRRI was assigned for each district to provide supervision. A total of 36 farmers were selected under those 32 Upazillas to conduct the program. The districts cover Gazipur, Thakurgaon, Pancchagor, C. Nawabgonj Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Magura, Narial,Jessore, Pabna, Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Barisal, Patuakhali, Jhalakathi, Faridpur, Pirojpur, sylect, Mowlavibazar, Habigonj, Comilla, Noakhali, Laxmipur and Jamalpur. BRRI varieties- BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan30, 31, 32,33,34,37,38,39,40 and 41 were promoted in the program. For grain yield estimation, 10 m2 samples were harvested and yield was expressed as t/ha at 14% moisture level.

During T. Aman 2004, seed production and distribution program (SPDP) was accomplished in 32 Upazillas of 25 districts. A wide variation in the yield of the same variety was observed among location. On an average, the photosensitive varieties, BR22 and BR 23 yielded respectively about 2.5 and 3.26 t/ha. Yield of the salt-tolerant varieties, BRRI dhan40 and 41 were 4.2 and 4.74 t/ha respectively. Average yield of the bold and medium bold grain varieties BRRI dhan30, 31, 32 & 33 were respectively 3.88, 3.45, 3.76 & 2.96 t/ha. Average yields of the aromatic fine-grain varieties-BRRI dhan34, 37 & 38 were respectively 2.58, 3.02 & 2.86 t/ha. Yield of BRRI dhan39 was 3.26 t/ha. Among the selected farmers, 5% was marginal (<1 acre), 40% was small (1-2.5 acre), 40% was medium (2.5-5.0 acre) and 15% was large (>5 acre) farmers. However, their average farm size was about 2.78 acre of which 2.45 acre (i.e. about 80%) was under rice cultivation about 66% of the farmers were solely growing BRRI varieties while 24% were still growing solely local varieties and about 10% of the farmers were growing both locals and MVs. BRRI varieties were grown in 73% of the selected plots in the previous year and the varieties were BR11 (30%), BR23 (2%), BRRI dhan30 (7%),31 (10%), 32 (8%), BRRI dhan33 (5%), BRRI dhan37(5%), BRRI dhan38 (2%), BRRI dhan41 (4%),while Sharna, Pajam, Rajashaill, Kazolsail and other locals were grown in 27% plots. The results showed that the awareness ratio of the BRRI varieties was 1:15 and the dissemination ratio was 1:5 i.e. on an average, 15 farmers showed their interest and 5 farmers expressed their for seeds of the BRRI varieties from 1 contact farmer.
