One Week Rice Production Training for Agriculture Extension Officer and Saao (2011-2012)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to 1.Recognize and apply the important concept, principles advanced techniques of modern rice production 2.Able to identify and solve field problems of rice cultivation 3.Train the field level extension agents and farmers Knowledge gain and improvement of the five batches of AEO varied very widely, which ranged from 38.8% to 56.2% and 110% to 256% with a very good average of 48.2% and 153%. Out of 90 participants, 57 participants received distinction certificates. A total of 29 and 4 participants obtained satisfactory and participatory certificates respectively.The average marks in benchmark evaluation of 10 batches of SAAO was 23%. Which was 74% in final evaluation. The percentage of knowledge gain and improvement were 51 and 221% respectively. The range of improvement among the ten batches was 174%- 248%. The average knowledge gain and improvement of 14 batches of SAAO those were came from different stress prone areas were 52.26% and 223% and the range of knowledge improvement was 191% to 255%. Among the 334 participants of stress prone areas, 170, 151 and 13 participants were got distinction, satisfactory and participatory certificates respectively.

Objectives:

Methodology:

One week rice production training program for AEO and SAAO were conducted with the financial support of GOB and Development and Dissemination of Rice Based Technologies Good for Changing Climate Project (Cliamte Change). A total of 29 training program were conducted. Among the training programmes,15 batches were conducted under GOB fund (five batches for AEO and ten batches for SAAO). Rest of 14 batches were conducted under Climate Change Project. Participants for GOB funded project were from all over the country. Where as the participants under climate change project were came from stress prone area(Salinity, drought, haor, beel, water logging and submergence) of 17 districts. A total of 733 participants were attended in this training program.Among them 70 participants were females.The course curriculum was designed based on the priority of field problems related to rice production and rice based technologies. The curriculum included classroom lecture, group discussion, field visit, Practical session, report presentation etc. A benchmark and final evaluation of the participants were done at the beginning and at the end of the training program.Performance and knowledge improvement of the trainees were calculated on the basis of the differences between marks obtained on benchmark and final evaluation of the individual participants.

Achievement/Findings:

Knowledge gain and improvement of the five batches of AEO varied very widely, which ranged from 38.8% to 56.2% and 110% to 256% with a very good average of 48.2% and 153%. Knowledge improvement and performance status of the participants' indicated the need and importance of rice production training. Therefore, this course should be continued. Moreover, the participants were also found very much interested about the course and requested to carry one-month course for the improvement of knowledge and skill of all extension officers.
