Evaluation of Crop Management Options for Narrowing the Yield Gap in Boro and T.aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BR11 in T. Aman, and BRRI dhan29 in Boro during 2008-09 season produced 15 and 34% higher grain yields, respectively with BRRI recommended management practices than the farmers management practices in Kapasia. In T. Aman and Boro seasons, farmers’ management practices combined with quality seeds and BRRI recommended fertilizer rate gave yield advantage of 10 and 23% compared to farmers’ management practices.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of different crop production factors in narrowing the yield gap at farm level

Methodology:

The study was conducted at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia under Gazipur district in four and three dispersed farmers’ fields during T. Aman 2008 and Boro 2008-09, respectively. Each farmer’s field was considered as one replication. Four management options: i) Farmer’s practice (FP), ii) FP + quality seed (QS), iii) Recommended management + USG and iv) BRRI recommended management practices were evaluated in each dispersed farmer’s field in each season. Under recommended practice, fertilizer rate for T. Aman and Boro season were 100, 10, 40, 10, 2 and 140, 15, 40, 10, 3 kg N, P, K, S, Zn/ha, respectively while these were 95-105, 7-12, 25-38, 8-10, 0 and 130-146, 8-11, 23-35, 0, 0 kg N, P, K, S, Zn/ha for farmers’ management practice. BR 11 and BRRI dhan29 were tested during T. Aman and Boro season, respectively. Recommended management practices adopted in this experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

In T. Aman season, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly affected by different management options. BRRI recommended management practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 15% higher than the farmers’ practice (4.16 t/ha). The result of the study revealed that an yield advantage of about 10% could be attained by using recommended management + USG practice while this was 4% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds were used with farmers’ management practice. The results of Boro season showed that yield and yield contributing characters were significantly affected by different management options. BRRI recommended management practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 34% higher than the farmers management practices (5.65t/ha).The results of the study also implies that a yield advantage of 23% could be attained by recommended management + USG practice while this was 21% higher than FP (farmer’s practice) when only quality seeds were used with farmers’ management practice.
