Evaluation of Different Cropping Patterns in Irrigated Medium Highland Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of different cropping pattern in medium highland irrigated ecosystems indicated that rice equivalent yield of Potato-DT Boro-T. Aman cropping pattern was highest (17.39 t/ha) which was followed by Boro-Fallow-T. Aman(11.12 t/ha), Mustard-T. Aus-T. Aman(12.75 t/ha) and Boro-T. Aus-T. Aman (13.39 t/ha) cropping patterns.

Objectives:

To intensify the cropping of those areas to enhance the system productivity under different cropping patterns with the efficient use of resources in irrigated medium highland ecosystem.

Methodology:

The experiment was designed in a RCB design with three replications during 2009-10 at the experimental farm, BRRI, Gazipur. The tested cropping patterns were: CP1= BRRI dhan29 (Boro) – Fallow (existing) – BRRI dhan49 (T.Aman) CP2= Asterix (Potato) – BRRI dhan29 (DT Boro) – BRRI dhan49 (T.Aman) CP3= Asterix (Potato) – BRRI dhan48 (T.Aus) –BRRI dhan49 (T.Aman) CP4= BARI sorisa9(Mustard) – BRRI dhan48 (T.Aus) –BRRI dhan49 (T.Aman) CP5= BRRI dhan29 (Boro) - BRRI dhan48 (T.Aus) –BRRI dhan46 (PS T.Aman) A common fertilizer dose of 100-10-40-8 kg/ha for N-P-K-S was used in T.Aman. Potato and mustard received 160-40-82-18-2 and 20-55-15-0-0 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-Zn respectively, with their standard management packages. The fertilizer rates for Boro and Aus were 140-15-60-15-4 and 80-10-40-8-2 kg/ha of N-P-K-S-Zn, respectively. In case of T.Aman and Boro, urea was applied in three equal splits and for Aus it was in two splits. The yield of each crop was converted to REY (rice equivalent yield) for comparing the system productivity. Utilization of resources like labor and inputs was recorded for calculating the variable cost and market price of the output at maturity was collected for determining the economic return.

Achievement/Findings:

Yields of potato were 11.46 and 9.93 t/ha under Potato-DT Boro -T.Aman, and Potato-T.Aus-T.Aman cropping patterns. Potato yield was lower due to late sowing. Yield of mustard was 1.06 t/ha. Yields of Boro rice were 5.62, 5.20 and 4.35 t/ha under Boro-Fallow-T.Aman, Boro-T.Aus -T.Aman and Potato - DT Boro-T.Aman cropping patterns. Yields of T.Aman rice ranged from 4.67 to 5.50 t/ha under different cropping patterns. Highest rice REY was obtained from Potato-DT Boro-T.Aman and Potato-T.Aus-T.Aman cropping patterns (17.39 and 16.19 t/ha, respectively) followed by Boro-T.Aus -T.Aman (13.39 t/ha), Mustard -T.Aus-T.Aman (12.75 t/ha) and the lowest from Boro- Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern. The highest REY of the Potato- DT Boro -T.Aman cropping pattern resulted highest gross return (313020 Tk /ha) which was 56, 36 and 30% higher than those of Boro-Fallow-T.Aman, Mustard-T.Aus-T.Aman and Boro-T.Aus-T.Aman cropping patterns.
