Influence of Maize Crop Residue Incorporation on the Productivity of Ds Aman Rice in Ds Aman-maize Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of the study was to develop management options for sustaining productivity of direct seeded (DS) Aman based maize cropping system under irrigated ecosystem. From the results it was found that incorporation with maize crop residue did not affect the yield of DS Aman.

Objectives:

To develop management options for sustaining productivity of direct seeded (DS) Aman based maize cropping system under irrigated ecosystem.

Methodology:

The experiment was initiated at East byed, BRRI Experimental Farm, Gazipur during 2008-09 in Boro season. The experiment was laid out in the Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. BRRI dhan39 was grown by direct seeding during Aman season with five treatments which were: i) without maize crop residue incorporation, ii) 100% maize crop residue incorporation, iii) 75% maize crop residue incorporation, iv) 50% maize crop residue incorporation and v) 25% maize crop residue incorporation. BRRI recommended fertilizer was used along with maize crop residue. In Rabi season, BARI Hybrid Maize-5 was used and BARI recommended management practice ware followed. After maize crop harvest, crop residues were incorporated. Recommended management package was followed for maize and it was grown as rabi crop. Recommended management practices adopted in this experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

Though maize has high yield potential and high nutrient uptake etc unbalanced fertilizer use may limit its expansion and decrease yield in future. Even in recent past, in some cases decrease in maize yield have been reported in Bangladesh. The situation may aggravate if proper measures are not suggested for managing soil under intensive cultivation. There was no significant difference in maize yield and yield contributing characters among the treatments. Maximum yield was found in T₃ (6.16 t/ha). Similar trend for Aman rice was also observed and the highest yield of 5.05 t/ha was also obtained from T₃.
