Effect of Water Management on as Uptake by Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The grain yield of BRRI dhan28 differed significantly among the treatments. The highest grain yield was observed in AWD treatment irrigated by ground water (8.28 t/ha) followed by continuous standing water irrigated by surface water (8.21 t/ha). Unlike grain yield, grain As conc. was not affected by any of the water management treatments. Grain As conc. of BRRI dhan28 ranged from 0.17 to 0.26 mg/kg and was much lower than the permissible limit (1 mg/kg).

Objectives:

To find the effect of AWD and conventional irrigation methods on As uptake by rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up at BRRI farm Bhanga, Faridpur. The soil As conc. of the site was 13.3 mg/kg. The sources of water for irrigation were a) As-contaminated STW (As conc. 160 ppb) and b) As-free surface water (pond). The experimental design was RCBD with three replications. Two water management methods: AWD and continuous standing water (CSW) were maintained with two sources of water (ground water (GW) and surface water (SW)). The unit plot size was 3 X 6 m2. The plots were separated with polythene sheets at a depth of 45 cm to resist the entrance of seepage water. Sixty days old seedlings of BRRI dhan28 were transplanted during early February. The rates fertilizers were N, P, K, S and Zn @ 115-20-60-12-3 kg/ha from urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulfate, respectively. Irrigation water was continuously applied during the first 2 weeks in all the plots. However, after 2 weeks, AWD plots received irrigation water only after the recession of the standing water up to 15 cm depth. This intermittent flooding continued up to panicle initiation (PI) stage of the crops. From PI to maturity stage, water was kept standing. Both initial and post-harvest soil samples (composite) were collected from the plots. The soil samples were air dried, ground and sieved for As analysis. At maturity, the crop was harvested and grain and straw yields were recorded. Samples were dried and processed before digestion in tri-acid mixture for As-analysis. Irrigation water samples were collected during irrigation period and preserved for As analysis. Arsenic conc. in grain and water was determined by hydride generation-Atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
