Evaluation of Double Transplanting and Normal Transplanting of T.aman and Boro Rice Under T.aman-boro Cropping Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Under late situation, double transplanting done on the same day of normal transplanting (25 September in T. Aman and 25 February in Boro) gave significantly higher grain yield than that of normal transplanting in both T. Aman and Boro seasons.

Objectives:

i) To minimize yield loss of Boro rice due to delayed planting through the adoption of double transplanting ii) To increase system productivity

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during T.Aman 2010-11 seasons at BRRI farm, Gazipur. In this experiment five planting methods with three varieties were used. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. In T.Aman season, treatments were: Factor A: Planting methods under different time of transplanting: T₁- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 July; T₂- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 August; T₃- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 September; T₄- Normal transplanting with 60 days old seedling transplanting on 25 September; T₅- Double transplanting with (30+30) days old seedling (1st TP: 25 August; 2nd TP 25 September; sowing 25 July) and Factor B: Variety: V₁- BRRI dhan49, V₂ – BR22 and V₃ - BRRI dhan46. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied as per recommendation. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal split but in T₄ and T₅ only two splits were applied. By contrast, in case of double transplanting at 1st TP plot all non urea fertilizers were applied at final land preparation and one split urea was applied 15 days after 1st TP.

Achievement/Findings:

The results of the study revealed that the effect of establishment method and interaction between establishment methods and variety was significant for all the studied parameters in T.Aman seasons. Effect of variety was significant for all the parameters except panicle/m² in T.Aman season. In T.Aman season, all the varieties gave the highest grain yield in optimum time normal transplanting method (T₁). In T₂ establishment method, BRRI dhan46 gave the highest grain yield of 5.75 t/ha and BRRI dhan49 in T₁ establishment method yielded 5.48 t/ha among the tested varieties. While BRRI dhan46 gave the highest grain yield of 3.79 t/ha among the tested varieties in T₃ establishment method. All the tested varieties gave the lowest yield in T₄ establishment method where 60 days-old seedling was transplanted on 25 September. Double transplanting (T₅) of all the tested varieties on the same day gave significantly higher yield than T₄ establishment method. The grain yield of all the three varieties established in double transplanting method were comparable to those obtained in T₂ establishment method transplanted on 25 August.
