Development of Nursery Management and Culture Technique of Mystus Gulio

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Mean length of nona tengra (M. gulio) fries was highest of 2.79 cm in ponds fertilized with mixture of organic and inorganic fertilizers, followed by 2.72 cm in ponds with organic fertilizers only and 2.70 cm in ponds with both organic and inorganic fertilizers. Final wt of the fry was highest of 0.93g in ponds fertilized with inorganic fertilizers only, followed by 0.91 g in ponds with organic fertilizer and 0.83 g in ponds with mixture of inorganic and organic fertilizer. However, average survival of the stocked hatchlings was highest of 69.35% in ponds fertilized with organic fertilizer only (T1) followed by 57.19% survival in ponds fertilized with mixture of organic and inorganic fertilizers (T3) and 46.01% survival in ponds with inorganic fertilizers only (T2). The differences in survival among three treatments were significant. After five months of rearing, growth of fishes were 21.90-24.12g, 17.10-19.80g and 15.60-22.65g in ponds stocked @ 4, 5 and 6 Nos/m2, respectively.

Objectives:

To develop nursery managementg technique of brackishwater Catfish (Mystus guilio); to develop production technique of brackishwater catfish (Mystus gulio).

Methodology:

The ponds were prepared by drying, liming soil with CaO @ 250 kg/ha and then filling with tidal water up to 100 cm. Pond water was treated with dolomite @ 20ppm. After 5 days of liming, particular pond was fertilized with respective fertilizer and dose as given in the experimental design. Five days after fertilization, by which time sufficient planktons were developed, dipterex @ 1 ppm was spread over the water surface to kill aquatic insects and big sized zooplankton like cladocerans and copepods. Twenty four hours after spreading of dipterex, four days old hatchlings (average length, 05 mm) nona tengra (M. gulio) were stocked uniformly @ 250 Nos/m2 in all ponds. From the second day of stocking, fish, fries were fed twice daily with a mixture of finely powdered mustard oil cake, rice bran and fish meal at the ratio of 2:3:5. Subsequent to stocking of hatchlings, the ponds were being fertilized regularly at seven days intervals with one fourth of the initial dose of fertilizer. Three stocking densities viz. 4, 5 and 6 Nos/m2 were tried each with three replications in earthen ponds of 500 m2 each. After seven days of fertilization, required quantity of one month old fries of catfish was stocked in all ponds.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings of the study was falicitated development of production technique of brackishwater catfish (Mystus gulio). This will pave the way for expansion of nursery management and culture technique of this important species in the vast coastal water bodies of Bangladesh. As a result, supply of this fish in both national and international markets will be increased.
