Brackishwater Station, Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Paikgacha, Khulna

In the 1st trial, temperature, salinity, pH, morning dissolved oxygen and alkalinity of water of the pond were 32.8-34.5oC, 15-16‰, 8.1-9.2, 4.3-6.2 mg/l and 120.46-134.50 mg/l, respectively. All these parameters were congenial for crab fattening. After six DOR, 60% gonad of the stocked crabs was developed in T1 where crabs were fed with locally prepared feed, 50% in T2 where crabs were fed with CP shrimp feed and 70% in T3 where crabs were fed with chopped tilapia. After 12 DOR, 100% gonad in all crabs was fully developed in T1 and T3. But gonad of 7-10% crabs did not develop fully in T2 where crabs were fed with CP shrimp feed. The differences in gonad development among different treatments were not significant. Survival of crabs was 89.44%, 81.00% and 82.77% in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. In the 2nd trial, temperature, salinity, pH, morning dissolved oxygen and alkalinity of water of the pond were 31.5-33.5oC, 10-12‰, 7.5-8.2, 3.1-6.1 mg/l and 120.24-135.60 mg/l, respectively. In this trial, 100% gonad in all crabs was fully developed in all three treatments.

The proposed project is aimed to fulfill the following objectives: To evaluate different commercial quaculture diets in crab fattening practices; to develop low-cost artificial diets from local ingredients; to determine the efficiency of plant originated protein as a replacement of animal originated protein in crab feed; to develop sustainable crab fattening practices with maximum profit.

The experiment was conducted with two artificially prepared pellet feeds viz., feed prepared from local ingredients (T1) and CP shrimp feed (T2). These two feeds were compared with chopped small sized tilapia (T3) each with three replications. Protein content was 38.05% in prepared feed, 38% in CP shrimp feed and 20.30% in tilapia. The same experiment was repeated for perfection. For the study, one on station earthen pond was divided into nine compartments by erecting fence made of bamboo slits. The area of each compartment was 60 m2. Soil of each compartment was treated with CaO @ 250 kg/ha. After three days, the pond was filled with tidal brackishwater up to 100 cm. Water of the pond was treated with dolomite @ 20 ppm. After 7 days of liming, the compartments were equally fertilized with urea and TSP @ 2.5 ppm each. After five days of fertilization when sufficient planktons were grown, non-gravid female crabs (ABW, 150-160g) were stocked in each compartment at a density of 2/m2. Feed was applied at the rate of 8% body weight of the stocked crabs thrice daily. Fattening performance of the crabs were initially checked after six days of rearing (DOR) and then at three days interval. For checking gonad development, 10% of the stocked crabs were collected from each compartment by bait and scoop method. Per cent development of gonad of each crab was checked against light and recorded. The average of percent development of gonad has been presented. After 12 days of rearing, all crabs were harvested by dewatering the pond and per cent development of gonad was recorded.

In natural conditions, mud crab generally feed on crustaceans, mollusks and polycheat. In culture conditions, it is difficult to grow these feed items. Crab fattening/culture in the world wide generally dependent on trash fish and snails. Use of raw feed often caused water quality deterioration and fouling. Formulated diets using cheap and indigenous feed ingredients could be an alternative feed. The findings of the above trials on the fattening of mud crabs using artificial feeds in earthen pond corroborate the findings of the previous year which was conducted in cemented cistern. Now there is no doubt on possibility of fattening of mud crab using artificial feed.
