Investigation Into Soil-water Characteristics of Shrimp Farms Under Existing Culture Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The water temperature at the experimental ghers varied between 25^oC~32^oC during the experimental period which is conducive to the growth of shrimp. The pH of water at the experimental ghers varied between 7.9 ~ 9.4 during the experimental period. Highest pH was observed in extensive culture systems compare to improved extensive and semi-intensive culture system. Dissolved oxygen and ammonia were recorded within a range from 4.15~7.1 mg/l and 0~0.2 mg/l, respectively, in the experimental ghers which was in the productive level. The maximum salinity was recorded from 8 to 1 ppt during the experimental period. The value of organic matter was found 3.5±0.89 %, 3.24±0.85 % and 3.95±1.65 % in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The salinity of soil was higher in present experimental area compare to low saline zone of mollahat upazila under Bagerhat district.

Objectives:

To observe and evaluate the effects of different soil-water parameters under different treatments; to identify and assess the concentration and variation of different groups of phytoplankton and zooplankton; to assess the extent of salt intrusion in soil under different treatments.

Methodology:

Experiment was carried out with shrimp ghers from Bagerhat sadar, Kochua and Mongla upazila in Bagerhat district. Soil sample was collected from respective site and carried to the laboratory for analyses. Parameters such as soil pH, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, organic carbon and total nitrogen were analyzed by the assistance of respective soil testing laboratory. Throughout the experimental period, the water quality parameters were record monthly.

Achievement/Findings:

Productivity of shrimp gher depends on the availability of suitable environmental condition and food organisms. Soil-water parameters study was helpful for determination of productivity of shrimp ghers. Moreover, production and management technique under different treatments were evaluated, revealed factors for increase shrimp production.
