Impact of Probiotics on Prawn (macrobrachium Rosenbergii) Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Role of different probiotics like Super Ps, Super biotic and Super Ps Biotic on prawn (M. rosenenbergii) health and prawn production were investigated at stocking density of 25,000/ha. The artificially manufactured probiotics (beneficial bacteria), Bacillus sp. (recommended by manufacturer at strength of 109 CFU/g) had been administered in the ponds. Fortnightly intervals growth of prawn was measured and feed was adjusted. Day after 180 of husbandry, all prawn from each pond were harvested. Higher survival (84%) of prawn was found in T2 followed by 81.9% in T3 and 76.9% in T1. Mean body weight of prawn in T2 was highest of 70.6 g which was significantly (p<0.05) different from that of T3 (62.3 g) and T1 (55.4 g). Food conversion ratio (FCR) was lower (2.71) in T2 than that of 3.20 in T1 and 2.92 in T3. Comparatively higher production (1,210.4 kg/ha) of prawn was recorded in T2 than T3 (1,130.46 kg/ha) and T1 (940.3 kg/ha). The findings obtained from the study revealed that higher growth, survival and production of prawn were found from the ponds treated with super biotic probiotics than the other probiotics treated ponds.

Objectives:

To evaluate the impact of probiotics on growth and production of prawn (M. rosenbergii); to evaluate the economic feasibility of production of prawn with or without added probiotics; to study the soil and water quality parameters of the experimental ponds.

Methodology:

Impact of probiotics on the growth and production of prawn and shrimp was assessed. The ponds were prepared by drying, followed by liming with CaO @ 250 kg/ha. After 7-10 days, ponds were stocked with juvenile of prawn (M. rosenbergii) and post-larvae of shrimp (Penaeus monodon). Prawn and shrimp of all the ponds were fed with commercial feed @ 10~3% of total biomass twice daily. Liming @ 50 kg/ha and fertilization with TSP and urea (2:1) @ 30 kg/ha or organic fertilizer were also applied on necessity. Quantity of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) and pathogenic bacteria (Vibrio sp.) of pond water and sediment were monitored at fortnightly/monthly intervals. These was compared with controlled ponds (without probiotics). After 120-180 days of culture, all prawn and shrimp were harvested to drain the ponds.

Achievement/Findings:

Shrimp/fish are continuously exposed to a wide range of microorganisms present in the environment. It has been reported that some lactic acid bacteria associated with the gastrointestinal tract of fish/shrimp can act as probiotics. These candidates are able to colonies the gut, and act antagonistic Gram-negative fish/shrimp pathogens. The probiotic- Super biotic performed highest production with survival in shrimp aquaculture.
