Investigation Into Shrimp/ Prawn Disease and Their Control Strategies

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Investigation into emerging diseases carried out in 9 hatcheries of Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat and sample was collected for further investigation. Irrespective to temperature, salinity level 10 gives lowest death, but irrespective to salinity, temperature level 32 gives lowest death. Salinity level 10 and temperature level 24 gives the best result among all combinations, but salinity level 2 and temperature level 24 or 28 gives the worst cases. Thus it looks the low-low combination is more devastating, and high salinity and low temperature give the best result. Any other combinations, such as high-high, low-high gives mixed results. In total, salinity 10 and temperature 24 gives the lowest death rate. However, low salinity causes to more death in earlier period and high salinity prolong the death, but temperature shows the similar pattern for any ranges.

Objectives:

To investigation of emerging diseases; confirmation of stressed factors (Temperature and salinity)

Methodology:

PCR tested WSSV negative healthy shrimp samples were released into series of glass tanks containing ground water and natural water collected directly from the ghers/rivers. Al the samples were subjected under heat and salinity shock treatment with at least 3 replications as well as with control conditions after the samples being acclimatized for required period of time. Heat and salinity shock was applied by sudden fluctuation of the parameters either decreasing or increasing for pre-determined period of time. Infection was confirmed using PCR based molecular techniques. Nine gher/farms were investigated randomly in context to aqua ecology and pathogens. At least 100 shrimp from each gher was examined during each sampling period for clinical signs and symptoms by eye observation. If there is any sign and symptom of disease, 10 shrimp samples were collected and carried to shrimp disease laboratory for parasitic, bacterial and viral investigation.

Achievement/Findings:

White Spot Disease is an adverse event during the shrimp cropping period. If a high prevalence of WSSV in seed batches stocked in ponds increases the probability of occurrence of WSD then the high prevalence of WSSV in seed batches is called a risk factor to WSD. Epidemiology investigates the statistical and biological significance of the relationship between the adverse event and the hypothesised risk factor to determine whether the hypothesised risk factor is a risk factor or not. In a farm situation, a number of “component causes” (risk factors) along with the “necessary cause” might become “sufficient cause” to produce WSD outbreaks.
