Assessment of Hazardous Antibiotics and Pesticides in Shrimp and Fish of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For detection and quantification of Nitrofuran metabolites and chloramphenicol, total 33 samples of shrimp were analyzed. Samples were collected from Rampal, Mongla and Bagerhat sadar upazilla of Bagerhat district. Total 5 samples were positive for Nitrofuran metabolites of which 4 and 1 sample were respectively from Bagerhat sadar and Mongla upazilla. All of the positive sample’s concentration were in the acceptable range one (4.56ppb) from Bagerhat sadar upazilla. No chloramphenicol was detected in any of samples. Samples were collected from Khulna New market (Station 1), Moilapota (Station 2) and Khalispur (Station 3), Najirartek (Station 4), Khuruskhul (Station 5), Borobazar (Station 6) Chittagong Asadgonj (Station 7), Reajuddin Bazar (Station 8), Newmarket (Station 9). Four commercially available species of dry fish species namely Ribbon fish (Lepturacanthus savala), Bobay duck (Harpodon nehereus), Chinese pomfret (Pampus chinensis) and Shrimp (Mixed species) were collected from each market. All samples of Chinese Pomfret collected from 9 different stations contained DDT residues that ranged from 2.81 - 877.82 ppb respectively. The mean concentration of Ribbon fish from the sampling stations were ranged from 3.73 - 253.68 ppb (except for station-1). The range of DDT use in shrimp sp. was ranged from 4.27 - 585.97 ppb respectively.

Objectives:

1. Detection and determination of insecticides (DDT, heptachlor and dichlorovos) in dry fish during winter and rainy season; and

2. To investigate naturally occurring antibiotic metabolites in shrimp/ prawn in Khulna and Bagerhat region.

Methodology:

Research program was carried out in Khulna, Bagerhat, Cox’sbazar and Chittagong region. Dried fish samples were collected from different sites of Bangladesh for assessment of pesticides residues. For analysis of antibiotics (Nitrofurans, Chloramphenicol, Crystal violets) fish samples were collected from different sites of south-west region of Bangladesh. The sample was analyzed using Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrophotometer GCMS (Shimadzu QP 2010plus, Japan) and LCMS/MS at SRS, BFRI.

Achievement/Findings:

Very little effort has been made in Bangladesh to develop methods of pesticide management other than the use of pesticides. Along with the increasing use of pesticides, there is also an increasing demand on the awareness grow-up of the effect of pesticides on human health and the environment in general. In the global context, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has developed the International Code of Conduct on the distribution and use of pesticides. The present study demonstrated assessment of pesticides and antibiotics ( Nitrofuran, Chloramphenicol, Crystal violet) in fish and shrimp. The Knowledge will be helpful for developing appropriate policy guideline in order to produce safe shrimp and ensure smooth export of shrimp and fish products.
