Promotion of Improved Varieties of Turmeric Cultivation in the Homestead

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Turmeric yield, on an average was 30 kg with gross margin of Tk.1039.80 from a homestead area of 21.21 m². Results also indicated that the resource poor farmers can earn an additional income by growing the turmeric on the land available in household areas.

Objectives:

i) To create awareness among farmers in growing turmeric in unutilized or shady places of the homesteads and ii) To increase production of turmeric and farm income through utilization of homestead area

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia, Gazipur during the period of 18 April 2010 to 25 March 2011, Turmeric (BARI holud2) was grown in ten selected farmer's homesteads. Prior to start of the activities, the participatory farmers were imparted training on the production package of the spices. Turmeric was planted at a spacing of 50 × 25 cm apart using 5 t/ha seed. Crops were harvested at full maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Turmeric is an important spice for Bangladesh but the production is not sufficient to meet the demand of the country. As a result this spice is imported from other countries. To increase its production bringing more areas under cultivation is not possible because of land limitation. However, partially shady fallow land is available in and around the homesteads where farmers can cultivate turmeric. In this study turmeric yield, on an average was 30 kg with gross margin of Tk.1039.80 from a homestead area of 21.21 m2. Results also indicated that the resource poor farmers can earn an additional income by growing the turmeric on the land available in household areas.
