Productivity Evaluation of Boro-fallow-t. Aman Cropping Pattern as Influenced by Establishment Method of Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During Boro, 2008-09, the grain yield obtained in direct seeding was either comparable to or lower than that obtained in transplanting. Though seed to seed maturity duration was lower in direct seeding than transplanting but it required longer main field duration, which limited the scope of increasing cropping intensity.

Objectives:

To compare productivity of T.Aman-Boro cropping pattern due to establishment method of Boro rice

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in BRRI west byde during T. Aman 2008 and Boro 2008-09 at BRRI farm. BRRI dhan49 was grown crop in T. Aman. In Boro, the treatments were: broadcast (T₁), drum seeding (T₂), transplanting with 20 day-old seedling (T₃), transplanting with 30 day-old seedling (T₄) were done on the same day on December 15, 2008. Transplanting was also done on 05 (T₅) and 25 (T₆) January, 2009 with 40 day-old seedlings. The variety, BRRI dhan29 was used in the experiment. The treatments were compared in RCB design with three replications for yield, yield contributing characters, seed to seed maturity and main field duration.

Achievement/Findings:

During T. Aman, BRRI dhan49 gave 5.72 t/ha grain yield as cover crop and it was harvested 32 days before direct seeding in Boro. Broadcast, drum seeding and transplanting on 15 December with 20 (T₃) and 30 (T₄) day-old seedlings gave comparable grain yield which were significantly lower than transplanting on 5 (T5) and 20 (T6) January with 40 day-old seedlings. The highest grain yield of 6.82 t/ha was obtained in T₅ treatment which was 19 and 14% higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively. In T₆ treatment, where seeds were shown in seedbed on the same day (15 December) of direct seeding in the main field, yielded 6.35 t/ha grain yield which was also 10 and 6% higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively. Duration was 12-17 days less in drum seeding than transplanting but main field duration was 8-25 days more in drum seeding than transplanting. Therefore, the scope of increasing cropping intensity through direct seeding is less than transplanting. The claim for higher yield and scope of increased cropping intensity in direct seeding was not found valid in the study.
