Multilocation Testing of BRRI Dhan29–fallow– BRRI Dhan46 Cropping Pattern in Different Locations of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The recommended patterns gave 12-24% higher grain yield and 12-27% gross margin over existing farmers’ patterns. The highest yield of 11.39 t/ha and gross margin of Tk. 201417/ha from recommended cropping pattern was obtained in B. Baria followed by Mymensingh where the pattern yield and gross margin were 10.73 t/ha and Tk. 160551/ha, respectively.

Objectives:

To increase productivity of existing system through introduction of BRRI developed high yielding varieties throughout the country

Methodology:

Six farmer’ field in a block were selected for evaluation of BRRI dhan29-Fallow-BRRI dhan46 (MHL-2 and MLL) cropping pattern and varieties with existing popular varieties for each location. Each farmer’s field represented one replication. Multilocation trial of BRRI dhan29–Fallow–BRRI dhan46 cropping pattern in medium highland phase II was undertaken at three Upazilas of Kurigram, Mymensingh and B. Baria districts. Block demonstration was done at five bigha land of five farmers at each Upazila.

Achievement/Findings:

In medium highland phase II, farmers usually grow local T.Aman varieties after recession of floodwater in Boro-Fallow– T.Aman cropping pattern. But the yield of T.Aman is very low due to use of local varieties or delayed planting in September and the total system productivity become very low. To address the situation, BRRI has developed photosensitive HYVs like, BR22, BR23 and BRRI dhan46. Recently developed BRRI dhan46 could be transplanted safely up to 25 September with at least 1 t/ha yield advantage over local varieties. In Boro season, the performance of BRRI dhan29 in the said pattern is very encouraging. Therefore, multilocation testing of BRRI dhan29–Fallow– BRRI dhan46 cropping pattern was undertaken to increase the system productivity.
