Regional Adaptation of Fertigation on Winter Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A fertigation trial on winter tomato was conducted at OFRD site, Pabna to evaluate the adaptability of fertigation at northwest region of Bangladesh in terms of technical and economic feasibility over traditional irrigation system. Two fertigation treatments including one farmerï¿½s traditional practice during the winter seasons of 2009-10 and 2010-11were used in the study. The highest marketable yield of tomato (58.19 t/ha) was obtained from treatment T2 (applying irrigation water alternate day incorporating fertilizer doses of N100 P100 K80 kg/ha) while the lowest yield (51.06 t/ha) was obtained from T1 (traditional system with fertilizer doses N205 P100 K125 kg/ha with 10 days interval application of irrigation water). The yield from fertigation method (treatment T2) was about 14% increase over the control. The fertigation system saved 52% urea, 36% of MP and about 50% of irrigation water over the traditional furrow irrigation system. A benefit cost ratio 3.19 was predicted for fertigation system based on the treatment T2.

Objectives:

This experiment has been undertaken to adapt the fertigation technique on the tomato cultivation in the study area.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted with tomato (BARI tomato 3) at OFRD, Pabna region during the Rabi season of 2009-2010 and 2010-11. The soil was silty clay loam having pH 6.5, field capacity 28.5 percent, wilting point 14.1 percent and bulk density of 1.50 gm/cc. The following treatment combination was considered in the study. T1= Furrow irrigation at 10 days interval with fertilizer doses N205 P100 K125 kg/ha T2= Drip irrigation at 2 days interval with fertilizer doses N100 P100 K80 kg/ha T3= Drip irrigation at 3 days interval with fertilizer doses N100 P100 K80 kg/ha The unit plot size was 4.0 m×2.4 m with recommended plant spacing of 60 cm×40 cm. Each treatment of the experiment was replicated thrice. The seedlings of 18-21 days old were transplanted on November 20, 2009 and November 25, 2010. Before started irrigation the soil moisture was measured as 24 %. Fertigation were done from December 13, 2009 to March 23, 2010 and from December 27, 2010 to March 18, 2011 respectively. The mixing ratio of fertilizer and water was 1:140. Irrigation was applied through drip system at every 2 and 3 days interval meeting the demand of crop ET. For mulching, paddy straw at the rate of 10 t/ha was used after 7 days of transplanting. The average dripper discharge was 4.60 lit/hr at optimum dripping condition. The furrow irrigation was applied up to field capacity at an interval of 10 days with the help of hose pipe. The matured tomatoes were harvested from 28 February to 04 April, 2010 and 23 February, 2011 to April 10, 2011. After each harvesting the required data were collected

Achievement/Findings:

Fertigation was found economically feasible for tomato cultivation in winter. From the study, it is observed that the fertigation system shows the best result in high yielding tomato than that of farmerï¿½s traditional irrigation practice by applying less water and fertilizer. Fertigation method saved 50% irrigation water, 52% urea and 36% MP over traditional furrow irrigation method. The economic return is higher (BCR=3.19) in fertigation system at 2 days interval. The fertigation system becomes getting popularity in Northwestern part of Bangladesh. This study may be replicated at end users level spatially in driest, salinity and hilly region of Bangladesh.
