Gender Issue and Application of Nitrogenous Fertilizer for the Profitability and Labor Efficiency for Rice Cultivation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to better utilization of laborer for the application of urea of super granules USG) and prilled urea (PU) regarding male and female laborers. The experiment was conducted at the BRRI Fram during T. Aman season, 2004 to determine better utilization of male and female laborer for application of USG and PU. Labor types did not affect the yield and yield component higher grain yield was observed in male labor treated plots. There were no significantly affected laborers in terms of time required for application of USG. Applications of USG increased grain yield up to 5 to 6% (220 to 250 kg ha-1) were needed for application of USG. Cost benefit analysis indicates that application of USG in the rice field is profitable application of PU as a source of nitrogen.

Objectives:

Better utilization of laborer for the application of urea of super granules (USG) and prilled urea (PU) regarding male and female laborers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI Fram during T. Aman season, 2004 to determine better utilization of male and female laborer for application of USG and PU. The unit plot size was 10 m x 10 m. the rice variety BRRI dhan39 was used. Three seedlings of 25 days were transplanted. Treatments were assigned in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Collected data were analyzed by following a standard statistical procedure and mean differences were adjusted by LSD method. Treatments: Factor A: Types of laborer (L) i) Male laborer ii) Female laborer Factor B: Application of PU and USG (A) i) PU as per recommended rate of N ii) PSG as per recommended rate of N and applies only one time iii) PSG as per recommended rate of N and applies in two equal splits.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect between labor types and application of nitrogenous fertilizer was not significant. Effect of labor types: Labor types did not affect the yield and yield component higher grain yield was observed in male labor treated plots. Effect of nitrogenous fertilizers: The tiller number m^-2, panicle number m^-2, grain number panicle^-1 and grain yield was highest when USG was applied twice as per recommended rate on N. the lowest tiller number m^-2 panicle number m^-2, grain number panicle^-1 were observed in PU applied plots. The 1000-grain weight and straw yield were not significantly affected by nitrogenous fertilizer. There were no significantly affected laborers in terms of time required for application of USG. Applications of USG increased grain yield up to 5 to 6% (220 to 250 kg ha^-1) were needed for application of USG. Marginal analyses: In this case it was considered all other costs same, except cost of labor, PU and USG. When UGS was applied once by male labor as per recommended rate of N the highest MRR Tk. 138.7 ha^-1 was found followed by application of USGI by female labor MRR Tk. 126.7 ha^-1 indicating that additional invested of every Tk. 100.0 ha^-1 for the application of USG gave return of Tk.138.7 ha^-1 and 126.7 ha^-1 respectively. Therefore, application of USG in the rice field is profitable application of PU as a source of nitrogen.
