A questionnaire survey work on bird damage was conducted among the mango farmers of two districts namely, Rajshahi and Chapai-nowabgonj during 2011-12. Among the 60 farmers had about 20 trees and only 20 farmers had more than 40 trees. Maximum farmers cultivated popular mango varieties namely, Langra, fazli, khirshapat and gopalbhog. According to the farmers (64%)bird damage occurred at the maturity stage. Flying fox, bulbul and crow were the major pest of mango. Bird caused fruit damaged by chewing and sucking followed by pecking. Average loss per farmer was calculated to be Tk. 4811.88 per year. The most popular control method used by the farmer was bird scaring (60%)followed by netting (23%).

Pest Management
i) To understand the status of bird as a mango pest and their nature of damage
ii) To gain some basic ideas about bird control technique used by the growers
The survey work was conducted in two districts namely, Rajshahi and Chapai-nowabgonj during 2011-12.This study was based on field survey where primary data were collected from the farm owners. An interview schedule was prepared to collect the data.at first a draft schedule was prepared. Then the schedule was pre-tested to verify the relevance of the question and the nature of the sample producer. After pre-testing and necessary adjustment,a final schedule was developed. A reasonable size of sample was considered to achieve the objectives of the study.Forty(40)samples of Chapai and 20 for Rajshahi were selected for the study. Apurposive sampling technique was followed. The data were collected intensively by using structured survey schedule method. The collected data were summarized, tabulated and analyzed. a tabular method of analysis was followed in analyzing the collected information.

Survey report revealed that the maximum farmers (60%) had about 20 trees and only 20 farmers had more than 40 trees. Maximum farmers cultivated popular mango varieties namely, Langra, fazli, khirshapat and gopalbhog in both Rajshahi and Chapai-nowabgonj districts. Majority of the farmers (64%) reported that the maximum bird damage occurred at the maturity stage. About 100% farmer reported that flying fox, bulbul and crow were the major pests of mango. About 80% farmer reported that the flying fox was a major problem in their orchard, while 52% farmers reported bulbul, 47% farmers reported for crow. Bird caused fruit damaged by chewing and sucking followed by pecking. About 74% farmer reported that fazli variety was mostly affected by birds. Average loss per farmer was calculated to be Tk. 4811.88 per year. The most popular control method used by the farmer was bird scaring (60%)followed by netting (23%). From the study it was revealed that the economic loss due to bird including flying fox was high in the mango orchard (about 5% of the total production). Applying of proper management technique will increase farmer income in the country.
