Animal Production Research Division, BLRI, Savar, Dhaka-1314.

The objective for ht e study was to evaluate the performance of BLRI developed milk replacer under on-station and on-farm conditions. Under on-farm condition and on-station condition a total of fourteen (14) crossbred calves and thirty-two (32) BCB-1 and RCC calves, respectively were used. Both on-farm and on-station trials, calves were reared followed under existing management practices. For both no-farm and on-station condition, calves sucked sufficient whole milk during milking considered as control (T0) and a limited suckling with feeding shoti based milk replacer in calves was considered as treatment (T1). The data were analyzed using paired sample t-test in SPSS 11.5 (SPSS Inc. 2002). Ti was observed that under both conditions, on significant differences were observed for DM and OM intakes in T0 and T0 group. However, a significant difference was observed for CP intake between the groups under both conditions. Similarly, for both condition, the overall concentrations of blood glucose and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) during the experimental period did not differ significantly in between group. Also showed a non-significant effect of feeding experimental diets under both conditions. Similarly, for both conditions, the overall concentrations of blood glucose and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) during the experimental period did not differ significantly in between group. Per day feeding cost per calf were reduced Tk 13.00 for no-station condition and Tk. 22.00 for on-farm condition in T1 treatment group as compared to cost involvement in T0 group. The results in this study revealed BLRI developed milk replacer (Shoti based) effectively maintained growth of calves as similar to milk fed calves and reduced feeding cost for both on-station and on-farm condition

To test the performance of BLRI developed milk replacer under on-farm and on-station conditions

The on-station activity under the present study was conducted at the Cattle farm, Patutia BLRI, Savar, Dhaka. Under on-farm condition, the trial was conducted at Pandhua village near BLRI Savar, Dhaka. All the laboratory works were conducted in the nutrition lab of APRD and Serology lab of AHRD, BLRI, Savar, Dhaka-1314. On-station, a total of thirty two (32) BCB-1 and RCC calves of about 6-10 days of age were selected and divided in two groups; 7 calves included under control (T0) and 25 calves under treatment groups (T1). A limited suckling with feeding shoti based milk replacer in claves was considered as treatment and demotes as T1. The duration of trial for on-station and on-farm condition was 90 and 60 days, respectively. Calves were suckled shole milk or fed milk replacers twice daily at 08:00 and 16:00 hrs. Incase of milk replacer feeding, at first the formulated powder was added in hot boiled water and maintained a ratio of 1:7 (milk replacer powder : water), so that the protein content of liquid milk replacer could be similar to milk. Then it was cooled to 37°C and supplied to the calves using plastic bottle. The daily weight gain was calculated by dividing the total weight gain by the number of experimental days. Mody measurements: Heart girth measurements were taken as the circumference of the thorax just behind the point of elbow; Body length (BL) - this was taken as the oblique distance from the point of shoulder to pin bone. Height at withers (HW): the measurement of height at withers was taken as the vertical distance from the point of hoof of the foreleg to the highest point over withers. The cost involved for preparation of milk replacer was calculated using market price of all individual ingredients. The cost involved per kg Shoti powder (including cost of Shoti collection, processing and grinding), soybean meal, soybean oil, di-calcium phosphate (DCP), vit-minprimix and common salt were Tk. 140.00, Tk. 42.00 Tk. TK. 110.00, 65.00, Tk. 200.00 and Tk. 20.00 respectively, and following steps were took for Chemical analysis of feed; Estimation of Blood urea nitrogen; blood glucose and Statistical analysis.

From the above results, it can be concluded that BLRI developed milk replacer effectively maintained growth of calves as similar to milk fed calves and reduced feeding cost for both on-station and on-farm condition. Therefore, this formulation of milk replacer can be suggested to the smallholder farms. More research will be needed for its further improvement in terms of processing, preservation, packaging and marketing techniques development.
