Agronomic Evaluation of Promising Clones of Sugarcane Developed at BSRI

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The salient results showed that in early planting under STP method the maximum number of millable cane 95.21 × 103 ha-1 was recorded from clone I 95-01;in conventional planting method the highest millable cane was achieved from the clone I 95-01. In case of late planting following STP method the highest millable cane were produced from the standard variety Isd 16 and clone I 36-00;in conventional method the highest millable cane was recorded from the clone I 95-01. In STP method under early plantation the highest cane yield (69.76 t ha-1) was obtained from the clone I 95-01;in conventional method the highest cane yield (68.96 t ha-1) was harvested from the same clone I 95-01. Under late plantation following STP method,the highest cane yield (66.46 t ha-1) was produced in clone I 95-01;in conventional method the highest cane yield (51.25 t ha-1) was harvested from the clone I 95-01.The overall results revealed that among the tested clones I 95-01, I 97-01, I 114-01 and I 36-00 showed the potentiality in all yield contributing parameters and juice quality both early and late planting. So, these clones may be recommended to release as varieties for commercial cultivation.

Objectives:

i). To study comparative performance of different promising clones under conventional and transplanting methods

ii). To find out the optimum time of planting/transplanting for advanced promising clones of sugarcane.

iii). To find out the best-promising clone for obtaining higher cane and sugar yield.

iv). To provide NSB with necessary agronomic information of the clones under study.

Methodology:

BSRI developed promising clones six promising sugarcane clones viz. I 95-01, I 97-01, I 99-01, I 112-01, I 114-01 and I 36-00 were tested in this experiment and compared with two standard varieties Isd 16 and Isd 37 at BSRI farm. Single budded soil bed settlings of 45 days old and two budded setts were transplanted/planted maintaining 100 cm row spacing. Settlings were transplanted 30 cm apart from each and setts were planted end to end in the row in two times viz. November, 2007 as early planting and January, 2008 as late planting to study their agronomic performances. The experiment was set up in standard design with three replications and unit plot size was 8m x 4m. Recommended doses of fertilizer (BARC, 2005) was applied and other cultural practices were done as and when required.

Achievement/Findings:

1.The results of this study would be generated sufficient data and information about the promising clones for submission to the National Seed Board (NSB) for evaluation and release as commercial variety/varieties.

2.The farmers may be benefited through growing the better-performed varieties.
