Profitability and Labor Efficiency for Rice Cultivation as Affected by Spacing Method of Weed Control.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to fine out the laborer efficiency of rice cultivation for different spacing and methods of weed control. This experiment was conducted at the BRRI Farm during Aus season 04 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. The unite plot size was 15m x 15m BR26 was used for experimental purpose. Effect of weed control methods: Grain yield and yield components were not affected by method of weed control. Application of REFIT for controlling weed gave the highest straw yield by weeding at 20 and 40 DAT by weeder. The lowest straw yield observed in hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAT. Considering other variable costs, hand weeding and use of weeder increased labor cost by Tk. 4080 and 930 respectively, over application of REFIT.

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the BRRI Farm during Aus season 04 in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. Collected data were analyzed by following a standard statistical procedure and the mean difference were adjusted by LSD method. Treatment: Factor A: Spacing Factor B: weed control method I) 25 m x 25 cm I) REFIT at recommended does. II) 20 m x 20 cm ii) Hand weeding at 20 DAT, 40 DAT. III) 20 m x 15 cm iii) Weeding by weeder at 20 DAT, 40 DAT. Effect of spacing: The closest spacing 20 m x 15 cm gave the higher tiller and panicle number m-2 followed by 20 m x 20 cm. the lowest tiller and panicle number m-2 was observed in widest spacing 25 m x 25 cm. the closest spacing 20 m x 15 cm increased grain yield about 13%. Grain number panicle-1 and 1000-grain was not affected by spacing.

Effect of spacing: The closest spacing 20 m x 15 cm gave the higher tiller and panicle number m-2 followed by 20 m x 20 cm. the lowest tiller and panicle number m-2 was observed in widest spacing 25 m x 25 cm. the closest spacing 20 m x 15 cm increased grain yield about 13%. Grain number panicle-1 and 1000-grain was not affected by spacing. Effect of weed control methods: Grain yield and yield components were not affected by method of weed control. Application of REFIT for controlling weed gave the highest straw yield by weeding at 20 and 40 DAT by weeder. The lowest straw yield observed in hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAT. Labor requirement: Hand weeding required the highest number of labor (61.2 man day ha-1) followed by weeding by weeder (19 man day ha-1) machine. Weed control by the application of REFIT required the lowest number (10 man day ha-1) of labor. Considering other variable costs, hand weeding and use of weeder increased labor cost by Tk. 4080 and 930 respectively, over application of REFIT.
