Development of Culture Technique and Utilization of Seaweed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comparatively more seaweed abundance was found in Western part, Southern tip of Cheradip and Eastern part (surrounding the Coast-guard/Navy point) in Saint Martin Island. Seaweed was found in the following places in outside of Saint Martin. Within collected and identified seaweed species, economically important Hypnea cornuta, Caularpa racemosa, Sargassum sp. and Pudina fraseri were selected for culture experiment in Saint martin island. Seaweed seeds (small segment of live seaweed) were collected from different areas of Saint Martin Island and attached with coconut rope nets with red cotton fiber during extreme low-tide period. Density of seaweed seed were 25-28 seed/m2. After 15 days of transplantation of seaweed seeds and cultured seaweed species were partially harvested and observed new buds were grown. After then partial harvesting were done fortnightly. The highest weight specific growth rate was found in Sargassum sp. from 5.5% to 5.9% per day, followed Caularpa racemosa from 4.9%to 5.4% per day, Padina fraseri from 3.2% to 3.8% and the lowest weight specific growth rate in Hypnea cornuta from 0.52% to 0.80% respectively

Objectives:

Development of seaweed culture technique in Bangladesh; investigate the nutritious value of seaweeds; utilization of seaweeds by producing value added products.

Methodology:

Seaweeds was collected randomly by hand-picking and also using knife from the St. Martin’s Island of Cox’s Bazar at the time of low-tide. After collection, fresh samples was gently brushed under running seawater, dried with paper tissue, put into plastic jar and then kept into freeze at (4-5) °C for few days for analysis. The seaweed samples was preserved in herbarium and sun dried sample were stored at room temperature for future utilization. To identifying the nutritional value proximate chemical analysis, amino-acid and vitamins analysis was done in BFRI/BAU/BCSIR laboratories. Seaweed cultivation was done in the adjacent of inter-tidal zone of St. Martin’s Island, Cox’s Bazar following vertical hanging in single line rope and horizontal net method.

Achievement/Findings:

There is no seaweed farming system in the Bangladesh as of now. At present seaweeds are only harvested by gathering from natural stock. About more than 100 households are engaged in seaweed collection by hand or push net from St. Martin’s Island. Collected seaweeds are sun dried on shore and dried seaweeds are consumed by local tribal people. Cultivable species and commercially important sea weed species will be known and it is very crucial for seaweed culture and its utilization. Nutritional status of collected seaweeds will come out through proximate chemical composition, amio-acid, vitamins and minerals analysis and it is important to make the species edible and commercially viable to the consumers.
