An experiment was carried out at Plant Physiology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during Boro season, 2011 to study the yielding ability of rice genotypes at different salinity levels.The experiment consisted of three salinity level, 3dS, 6dS and 9dS/m with seven genotypes, namely BRRI dhan47, BINA dhan8, FL478, IR29, BRRI dhan28 saltol, BR7105 and IR72579. Plant height was markedly reduced at 9 dS/m salinity level compared to control during the whole growth period in BRRI dhan47, BINA8 and IR72579. The tiller number per plant was also markedly reduced at different salinity level compared to control during the whole growth period of rice genotypes. At 3dS/m salinity level lowest reduction of grain yield was observed in tolerant genotype BRRI dhan47, BINA dhan8 as well as IR72579. At 9dS/m salinity level BRRI dhan28 saltol and IR29 could not survive but other genotype could survive and produced little grain.

To observe the yielding ability of rice genotypes at different salinity levels.

The experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Physiology division of BRRI during Boro season. Seven genotypes namely BRRI dhan47, BINA dhan8, FL478, IR29, BRRI dhan28 saltol, BR7105 and IR72579 were considered for this study. Plants have grown in perforated plastic pots (drilled and lined with canvas) filled with grinded soil. The soil was fertilized with NPK and S @ 50, 25, 40 and 25 mg/kg soil. The pots were placed inside a bucket serving as water baths. Three to four pre germinated seeds were sown at the soil surface of each pot. Two weeks after seeding, seedlings were thinned to one per pot. After 30 days of sowing salinization was made by adding NaCl in the bucket, at 3dS, 6dS and 9dS/m. One set of plants were used as a control set. Water level was maintained daily (1 cm above soil surface) by adding ordinary tap water. Plant height and tiller number were counted once a week up to flowering stage. At maturity plants were harvested and yield and yield components were considered.

Plant height was markedly reduced at 9 dS/m salinity level compared to control during the whole growth period in BRRI dhan47, BINA8 and IR72579. However, plants could not survive at 9 dS/m salinity level after 21 days and 42 days in IR29 and BRRI dhan28 saltol respectively. There was some difference observed during the growth period of BRRI dhan47 and BINA dhan8 for control plants compared to 3 and 6 dS/m salinity level, though finally it was same in control and 3 to 6 dS/m salinity level. The plant height of FL478 was more or less same in 0, 3 and 6 dS/m salinity level. The tiller number per plant was also markedly reduced at different salinity level compared to control during the whole growth period of rice genotypes. In BRRI dhan28 saltol, BRRI dhan47 and Fl478 the tiller number was markedly differ during the whole growth period at 3 dS/m salinity level but finally they produced same number of tiller as control. In IR72579 tiller number was markedly differ at saline condition compared to control. BINA dhan8 also showed the same trend. Tiller number was remarkably reduced in IR29 and BRRI dhan28 saltol at 6 dS/m salinity level. Yield was the highest in advance breeding line IR72579 followed by BR28-saltol in the non-saline conditions. Grain production was found to differ under salt stress conditions compared to control in all genotypes. But the reduction of grain yield was not same in all genotypes at same salinity level. At 3dS/m salinity level lowest reduction was observed in tolerant genotype BRRI dhan47, BINA dhan8 as well as IR72579. This reduction was remarkably higher in BRRI dhan28 saltol and IR29. At 9dS/m salinity level BRRI dhan28 saltol and IR29 could not survive but other genotype could survive and produced little grain.
