Site Specific Nutrient Management (ssnm) for Promising Advanced Lines

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In SSNM approach the estimation of N and P was found to be much lower than the applied doses. Such lower requirement may not be realistic practically. For the estimation of actual requirement of the major nutrients the techniques should be re-formulated considering the above situations.

Objectives:

To apply this technique for the determination of fertilizer rate of promising BRRI rice varieties and advance lines in a particular site.

Methodology:

The experiment was set up to evaluate this SSNM technique for the determination of major nutrients (N, P & K) in rice. In T.Aus'11 two genotypes namely, WEED TOLERANT RICE1 and HUANGHUAZHAN were tested along with BRRI dhan48 as check. In T.Aman'11 five advance lines (BR7465-1-2-4, BR7474-60-5-3, BR7465-1-4-1, BR7875-*5(NIL)-52-HR1, BR7878-5*(NIL)-72-HR6) were tested with three checks (BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38). Four nutrient management, namely, NPK, -N, -K and -P were imposed as treatments. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications, assigning nutrient management in main plots and variety in subplots. The NPK plot received N, P and K @ 62, 13 and 11 kg/ha on soil test basis (STB). Each of these three nutrients was omitted in the -N, -P and -K treatments respectively. The nutrient requirement by SSNM method for the genotypes were calculated assuming that 18 kg N, 2.5 kg P and 20 kg K are required per ton grain yield and the recovery of applied fertilizer nutrient by rice plant is 40% N, 25% P and 45% K. The difference between the grain yield in complete NPK treatment and -N, -P and -K were multiplied by these factors.

WEED TOLERANT RICE1 out yielded check BRRI dhan48 in complete NPK treatment while the yield of HUANGHUAZHAN was significantly lower than the check variety. The omission of N significantly reduced grain yield only in HUANGHUAZHAN. The other two genotypes (WEED TOL. and BRRI dhan48) were not responsive to N omission. Significant yield reduction was observed due to omission of P in WEED TOL. and BRRI dhan48 while K omission reduced yield in HUANGHUAZHAN and WEED TOL. The magnitude of yield reduction due to nutrient omission was higher in K (0.2-1.1 t/ha) than the other two nutrients (0-0.35 in -N and 0.14-0.73 t/ha in -P). The observed grain yield was attained on soil test based fertilizer application (N, P and K @ 62, 13 and 11 kg/ha, respectively).The predicted doses of N and P for the observed yield are much lower than the applied (STB) dose. Two of the genotypes do not require additional N. However, the estimated K requirement was found to be higher than the applied dose. Among the tested T. Aman lines some out yielded the check varieties in complete NPK treatment while some did not. However, all of the tested lines out yielded BRRI dhan37 significantly. Like T.Aus, significant interaction effect on yield was observed between nutrient management and genotypes. Omission of N significantly reduced grain yield in BR7465-1-2-4, BR7465-1-4-1 and BRRI dhan38. Similarly, P omission significantly reduced grain yield only in two (BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan38) out of eight genotypes. On the other hand, K omission drastically reduced grain yield in almost all genotypes. BR7875-*5(NIL)-52-HR1 and BR7878-5*(NIL)-72-HR6 was found to be non-responsive to fertilizer addition at their yield level.The observed grain yield was attained on soil test based fertilizer application (N, P and K @ 62, 13 and 11 kg/ha, respectively).
