Influence of Different Repellent Inter Crops for the Management of Sugarcane Insect Pest

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to manage the sugarcane borer following IPM (Integrated Pest Management) based strategy with special emphasis on marigold as a repellent crop. It was reflected from the results that in the month of June, TSB infestations were higher in treatment T2 (Early marigold). In July and September there was no significant effect among the treatment. But in the month of August and October the highest number of TSB was found in control treatment with 1.97 and 1.58 percentage. Incase of stem borer infestation data showed not significant in the month of June. But in the month of July, August, September and October highest data were found in control with 1.99, 6.63, 7.84 and 9.68 percentage.In case of tiller, millable cane production and yield of cane, all the treatments statistically identical to each others. Lastly marigold may be recommended for use as a repellent crop to avoid the indiscriminate use of chemical insecticides that are hazardous to environment.

Objectives:

1. To find out the effectiveness of inter cropping as repellent agent in controlling sugarcane bores and termite.

2. To find out different controls measure-approaching IPM

3. To inhibit the attack of sugarcane borers.

4. To get extra income through inter cropping with sugarcane.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out in RSRS farm, Gazipur and laid out in RCBD having 3 replications. A total of 7 treatments T1= Marigold (Early variety),T2= Marigold (Late variety),T3= Garlic,T4= Turmeric,T5= Tobacco including control(T0) were applied. Effectiveness of different treatments were assessed on the basis of top shoot borer infestation in 5 times (June,2009 to October,2009).Different yield parameters were also recorded in different IPM based treatment
