Comparison Among Drum Seeding Direct Seeding and Transplanting Methods for Rice Cultivation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objectives of this study were to find out the better, easier and labor saving method for rice cultivation,to evaluate the performances of drum seeding in large plots and to observe the yield potentiality for drums seeding. In Southeast Asian countries, rice production practices is changing with the advancement of technologies and changing socio-economic conditions. In Bangladesh manual transplanting is generally practiced for rice crop establishment. Direct drum seeding is a new idea and may be a good alternative for rice production in the puddle land.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI Farm during boro season’ 04-05 to find out the suitable planting method and variety. The experimental treatments were two varieties i.e. BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 and, three planting methods (Drum seeding direct seeding of sprouted seeds and Transplanting). Treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design (Factorial) with three replications. The unit plot size was 10m x 10m. Sprouted seeds @ 38 kg ha^-1 were sown by drum seeder with single thick row in the puddle plot and sown in the seedbed at the same date (1st December 2004) for transplanted purpose. Forty five days old seedlings @ 2-3 seedlings per hill were transplanted. Fertilizers were applied as 60-40-10-2 kg P₂O₅, K₂0, and S & Zn ha^-1 at the final land preparation as basal dose. BRRI recommended rate of N as urea was top-dressed on 15, 30&45 days after seeding and transplanting. Herbicide was sprayed once in the drum-seeded plots at an out 4-5 days after seeding for weed control. Other intercultural operations have been done as and when necessity. Collected data were analyzed by following a standard statistical procedure. It may be mentioned here that re-seeding was needed in some spots of the drum seeded plots for many reasons such as seedling mortality, bird damage of seeds etc.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction between variety and planting methods was not significant. So only the main effects have been discussed as mentioned: Effect of Variety: The tiller number m^-2, sterility percentage and 1000 grains weight were not significantly affected by variety. The BRRI dhan29 produced the highest grain yield (5.7 t ha^-1) due to higher panicle^-1 and panicle number m^-1.the BRRI dhan28 gave the lowest amount of grain yield (5.14 t ha^-1) might de due to reduction of grain panicle^-1 and panicle number m^-1. Effect of planting method: The drum seeding method produced the highest number of tiller m^-2 and panicle m^-2 followed by direct seeding method but there was no significant difference between drum seeding and direct seeding methods. The transplanting method gave the highest number of grains panicle^-1 where as direct seeding method produced the lowest number of grains panicle^-1. There was no significant effect on the production of planting methods on the sterility percentage and 1000 grains. The drum seeding method produced the highest grain yield (5.92 tha^-1) due to increase of panicle number m^-2 and grain panicle^-1. The lowest grain yield (5.12 tha^-1) was obtained from transplanting method by 10 to 11 days compared to transplanting method.
