Processing, ReGIStration and Storage of Rice Germplasm During 2007-10

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The new collections with more than 80% germination were registered as accession after cross checking with the seed and card catalogues to avoid duplication and seed mixture. Then at least 150 g seed of each variety were kept in the glass jar containing fresh silica gel in short term storage and another at least 150 g seed were kept in aluminium foil and stored in airtight glass jar for medium term and long term.The accessions having less than 80% germination were grown under line sowing in Aus and transplant condition in T. Aman and Boro seasons for seed increase and rejuvenation. The new collections with more than 80% germination were registered as accession after cross checking with the seed and card catalogues to avoid duplication and seed mixture. Then for all germplasm, at least 150 g seed of each variety were kept in the glass jar containing fresh silica gel in short-term storage and another at least 150 g seed were kept in aluminium foil and stored in airtight glass jar for medium and long-term storages in the respective year. However, a total of 9873 accessions of which 1343 accessions in Aus, 5803 accessions in T. Aman and 2727 accessions in Boro seasons of the respective year were processed and stored in short and medium-term storages during 2007-10, respectively. Every year, the seed of the old accessions were stored in their respective places. Among the above mentioned accessions, a total of 2736 accessions were stored in long-term Genebank. Besides, a total of 1074 germplasm were registered as new accession and stored both in short and medium-term storages during 2007-10. A total of 5068 accessions of which 1099 accessions in Aus, 2314 accessions in T. Aman and 1655 accessions in Boro seasons were processed and stored in short, medium-term storages. The seed of the old accessions were stored in their respective places. Among the above mentioned accessions a total of 1786 accessions has been stored in long term Genebank during the reporting year. A total of 405 germplasm were registered as new accession stored both in short and medium term storages. Among 405 accessions, 8 accessions in Aus, 98 accessions in T. Aman and 299 accessions in Boro 2006-07 were processed and stored in Genebank.

Objectives:

To keep the rice germplasm with respective accession number in the long, medium and short-term storages of Genebank after duplicate sorting.

Methodology:

In 2007-08, a total of 5068 accessions were grown in 5.4 m long row per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively for seed increase and rejuvenation during Aus 2007, T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-2008 seasons. In 2008-09, a total of 2028 germplasm including 466 new collections were grown in 5.4 m long row per entry and single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 X 20 cm between rows and plants, respectively for seed increase and rejuvenation and characterization during Aus 2008, T. Aman 2008 and Boro 2008-2009 seasons. In 2009-10, a total of 2777 germplasm including 182 new collections were grown for seed increase and rejuvenation and characterization during T. Aman 2009 and Boro 2009-2010 seasons. However, for all three years, the harvested germplasm were tested for germination. Those having more than 80% germination were stored in Genebank. Besides, the new collections with more than 80% germination were registered as accession after crosschecking with the seed and card catalogues to avoid duplication and seed mixture in each year. Then at least 150 g seed of each variety were kept in the glass jar containing fresh silica gel in short-term storage and another at least 150 g seed were kept in aluminium foil and stored in airtight glass jar for medium and long-term storage in the respective year.

Achievement/Findings:

In 2007-08, a total of 5068 accessions of which 1099 accessions in Aus, 2314 accessions in T. Aman and 1655 accessions in Boro seasons were processed and stored in short and medium-term storages. In 2008-09, a total of 2028 accessions of which 1465 accessions in T. Aman, 319 accessions in Boro and 244 in Aus seasons were processed and stored in short, medium and long-term storages. In 2009-10, a total of 2777 accessions of which 2024 accessions in T. Aman and 753 accessions in Boro seasons were processed and stored in short, medium and long-term storages. Every year, the seed of the old accessions were stored in their respective places. Among the above mentioned accessions, a total of 1786, 644 and 306 accessions has been stored in long-term Genebank during 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively. Besides, a total of 405, 488 and 181 germplasm were registered as new accession stored both in short and medium-term storages during 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10, respectively. However, among 405 accessions in 2007-08, 8 accessions in Aus, 98 accessions in T. Aman and 299 accessions in Boro seasons; among 448 accessions in 2008-09, 11 accessions in Aus, 215 accessions in T. Aman and 222 accessions in Boro seasons and among 181 accessions in 2009-10, 39 accessions in T. Aman and 142 accessions in Boro seasons were processed and stored in Genebank, respectively.
