An experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur and ARS, BARI, Comilla to find out the effect of different approaches in controlling common scab of potato var. Diamant. Seed treatment was done by Boric acid (3% and 1.5%), Amonium sulfate (7.0%), and Dithane M-45 (0.3%) before planting and soil amendment with Rice straw burning and Ammonium sulphate (200Kg/ha). Soil application with Dithane M-45 @ 0.3% after 35, 45, and 55days of planting also applied as treatment. The effect of treatments varied among them to reduce common scab of potato at both locations. Seed treatment with Amonium sulfate @ 7.0% (T3) before sowing found to be more effective to control common scab under both locations. The lowest scab severity and incidence were found inT3 at 1.27 % and 2.45%, respectively in Joydebpur and 4.72 % and 9.42% respectively, in Comilla. But, in Comilla, the efficacy of T3 treatment to control common scab of potato was similar to T1 (Seed treatment with Boric acid @3.0%). However, the germination and yield were not affected by the treatments, but in Joydebpur the yield increased by the treatments compared to control.

i) To find out the effective control measure using different seed and soil treatments to control potato scab under field condition and ii) To avoid deterioration of tuber quality due to scab.

The experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur and ARS, BARI, Comilla during December 2012 to March 2013 with the potato variety viz. Diamant. A total of eight treatments were included which were as follows: T1 = Seed treatment with Boric acid @ 3.0% before sowing for ten min T2 = Seed treatment with Boric acid @ 1.5% before sowing for ten min T3 = Seed treatment with Amonium sulfate @ 7.0% before sowing for ten min T4 = Soil amendment with Ammonium sulfate @ 200 Kg/ha T5 = Seed treatment with Dithane M-45 @ 0.3% before sowing T6 = Soil application with Dithane M-45 @ 0.3% after 35, 45 and 55 days of planting T7 = Rice straw burning T8 = Control The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. In case of control treatment only tubers were planted in the plot. The plot size was 3 m × 3 m with spacing of 60 cm × 25 cm. Recommended doses of fertilizers (N: P2O5: K2O: S @ 160:100:160:20 Kg/h) were applied and other agronomic practices were done accordingly. The crop was planted on 27. 11. 2012 and harvested on 26. 02. 2013. Data on germination, scab incidence, severity and yield were recorded. Scab incidence was calculated as total number of infected tubers divided by total number of harvested tuber and multiplied by 100. Tubers harvested from each plot were graded for determination of scab severity. Tubers were scored individually for scab severity according to the scale (Bakr, M. A. et. al 2010) Data were analyzed using MSTATC software. All percentage data were transformed before subjecting to ANOVA. The mean separation among the treatments tested showing significant differences by F-test at the 5% level of probability.

Seed treatment with Boric acid, Amonium sulfate, and Dithane M-45 and soil application with Amonium sulfate, Dithane M-45 and rice straw burning were compared for their efficiency to reduce common scab and on germination and yield under field condition at Joydebpur and Comilla (Table 1). The results of this study stated that the effect of treatments varied among them to reduce commoin scab of potato at both locations. Seed treatment with Amonium sulfate @ 7.0% (T3 before sowing found to be more effective to control common scab under both locations. The lowest scab severity and incidence were found by T3 at 1.27 % and 2.45%, respectively in Joydebpur and at 4.72 % and 9.42% respectively, in Comilla. But, in Comilla, the efficacy of T3 treatment to control common scab of potato was similar to T1 (Seed treatment with Boric acid @3.0%). The treatments had no effect on the tuber germination under both locations. However, there was not found any significant effect on the tuber yield among the treatments in Comilla, but the yield varied and found to increase among the treatments in Joydebpur (Table 2). In Joydebpur, the highest yield was found at 32.53 t/ha in T4 (Seed treatment with Dithane M-45) and it was similar to T2, T3, T5, T6 and T7. In Comilla, the T3 gave the maximum yield. There seems to be no adverse effect of all treatments on the yield and germination. For more confirmation it needs more study.
