Determination of Nutrient and Mineral Contents in Potato as Infected by the Common Scab

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur to find out the effect of common scab disease on nutrient and mineral contents of potato var. Diamant. Data regarding some nutrients such as sugar, starch, protein and nitrogen and different minerals namely Ca, Mg, P, S, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined analytically on dry weight basis from the peel and medula of healthy and infected tuber separately. Based on peel analysis, there were no significant differences in the content of sugar, starch, protein, nitrogen, Ca, Mg, S, Cu and Zn between infected and healthy tuber, while the P, Fe and Mn content was high in the infected potato compared to healthy tuber. In case of medula anlysis, the value of nirogen, protein and Cu content was changed, whereas the content of other compositions was the same between infected and healthy tuber. The percentage of N and protein found higher and Cu content provided lower in the infected tuber compared to healthy tuber.

Objectives:

i) to determine nutrient content in the common scab infected tuber and ii) to observe the possible change of other mineral contents of infected and healthy tuber.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at TCRC, BARI, Gazipur using the susceptible potato variety Diamant. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design with four replications. Twenty tubers under each replication were included and served as one sample.After potato harvest, healthy and common scab infected tuber randomly selected and washed, rinsed in deionized water and briefly air-dried Selected tubers of each sample were taken and peeled off from the sample. The peel and medula were separated from healthy and infected tuber and Mineral elements such as Ca, Mg, P, S, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn were determined and the percentage of protein and nitrogen was measured.Data were analyzed using MSTATC software. All percentage data were transformed before subjecting to ANOVA. The mean separation among the treatments tested showing significant differences by using t-test at the 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:
