Response of Cotton Genotypes to Soil Salinity in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The response of cotton to constant salinity has been well documented under controlled conditions, but its response to changing salinity under field conditions is poorly understood. An experiment was conducted in 2011 to evaluate the performance of three cotton genotypes viz. Rupali-1, DM-1 and CB-12 in the saline soil. Significant variation among the genotypes were observed in plant height, number of vegetative and fruiting branches, single boll weight, number of bolls per plant, days to first flowering and boll splitting, and seed cotton yield. Rupali-1 showed excellent overall performance with a yield potential of 2395 kg ha-1 due to it’s higher value in number of fruiting branches per plant, number of bolls per plant and single boll weight. Results revealed that Rupali-1 is more tolerance to the soil salinity than other genotypes. The experiment was conducted in the saline soil located at Shonnergacha, Kesobpur upazila under Jessore district of Bangladesh in 2011.

Objectives:

To test the yield performance of different genotypes of cotton in the coastal saline soil of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The performance of three cotton genotypes viz. cotton hybrid Rupali-1,cotton hybrid DM-1 and open pollinated cotton variety CB 12 were evaluated in randomized complete block design (RCBD)with six replications.The unit plot size was 6m x 4m and the plant spacing was 80 cm x 40 cm.Seeds were sowing in hill in the 1st February,2011.The nutrient elements such as Nitrogen,Phosphorous, Potassium, Sulpher, Boron and Zinc were applied at the rate of 115-35-88-18-4-7 kg/ha respectively.Intercultural operations such as weeding,thinning,gap filling,earthing up,irrigation,insects and pest management were done in all plots uniformly.Cotton yield contributing characters such as plant height,number of vegetative and fruiting branches per plant,number of effective boll per plant,single boll weight,days to first flowering and days to first boll splitting were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants and seed cotton yield was recorded from each plot.All data were analyzed statistically according to Zaman et al.(1982).

Achievement/Findings:

The cotton genotype Rupali-1 performs the best in terms of seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters such as number of boll per plant,individual boll weight in the saline soils of southern coastal region of Bangladesh.
